Really Bill?
Standing applause for a post that patronizes and insults duszek. Well they do say you can tell a man's character by his friends and so far you've chosen two doozies.

Fret not for me duszek as an Msc from Imperial College is good enough for me and I'm proud of my Polytechnic of North London B.A.(Hons) as, at the time, they were the only poly allowed to award such. (just in case, a Polytechnic over here does not mean the same as a Polytechnic in most of Europe.)duszek wrote:So what if Arising has no degree from Oxford or Cambridge ?

I'd pay no attention to Lakin's educational claims. Do you think a DPhil in English would have responded to you as he did? Do you think a DPhil would use images in his posts? Let alone post the college emblem. Do you think a DPhil would use paragraph breaks and punctuation the way he does? Do you think a DPhil would introduce themselves with their qualification and an exact list of the course content? Do you think an Oxford grad would say 'Oxford old boy'? No is the answer to all these.
The closest Lakin has got to Oxford University is their website when he copied the 'DPhil in English' entry to paste in his introduction.
Given the familiarity of his posting style I'd say Lakin has previous on this forum and has been banned a couple of times.(Woof! Woof! Eh! Pooch) The last time I think he called himself jesusknobhead or some such.
He's just another Interweeb philosophy troll whose failure to achieve an academic qualification has left him bitter and twisted and as such he seeks others to work out his issues of grandiosity upon. Not saying he's not bright nor that he can't write or think, it's just that his issues overwhelm him.

The stamps and seals upon my bits of paper say otherwise.Lakin wrote:You have missed the obvious point of the argument.
Unlike you, the Chicken thinks he is Socrates and he is posing as someone with a
Hons degree, in Philosophy and many other imaginary diplomas.
Show me where. Also his arguments are illogical and plainly silly .
With the exception of Buddhism your 'Eastern Philosophy' is Theology as in case it missed your large intellect Hinduism is a religion. Also he makes fundamental errors ,such as not understanding Eastern Philosophy and
yet forming an argument, in which an understanding of Eastern Philosophy is central.
Pay attention there! For there to be a debate Bill would have to put forward a case. He did not, he asked a bunch of questions which I answered. He is harassing Bill Wiltrack and not engaging in a good debate.
You've come late to my relationship with Bill so you've missed the first few years where I attempted to engage him in a debate about his ideas. However it became apparent that Bill is not here for this but to try and become a gnu. He also made it clear that whilst having never read any philosophers he could dismiss them, as such I find my opinion at odds with him and so express my right to reply to what he says in a philosophy forum.
Not that you'd be able to tell of course. Jealousy is a pitiful thing. His arguments are childish and facile and he is clearly not someone with an Hons
degree in Philosophy.
If they are so childish then the 'adult' should easily be able to answer them.
Now you're just projecting. You're also a loon if you think such is possible in this format, add to that we also have an ignore function. The point here is the Chicken is someone with no qualifications and low self esteem
and he is using this forum to bully and harass so that he can exert control over the forum.
You should know as you keep returning to me.Argument and insult has its place on a forum but methodical harassment
is something else.
Then they should be answerable.Look at this fools arguments.
They are child-like. ...
Not natural, hard-graft and sacrifice. Try it sometime and you too may get a bit of paper.I think you need to start to think a bit deeper before you confuse the Chicken
with natural talent.

You are mistaken duszek. The magazine is meant for the interested amateur philosopher but its articles are written by professionals. Its that they are allowed to write in a conversational style rather than an academic one, hopefully to educate and promote an interest in philosophy.duszek wrote:...
This forum is a sandpit for amateur philosophers. (That´s the idea behind Rick´s Magazine too, if I am not mistaken).

.
Of all the years I have posted here at The Philosophy Now Forums, or any other forums, THIS is the first time I typed the word GNU.
Having said that I make no association to the effort of my writings towards that word; gnu.
I don't even like that word.
That's NOT me. I will never use that word again.
As for the Philosophy Now Magazine, you stated; - The magazine is meant for the interested amateur philosopher but its articles are written by professionals. Its that they are allowed to write in a conversational style rather than an academic one, hopefully to educate and promote an interest in philosophy.
If - The magazine is meant for the interested amateur philosopher its articles should be written by amateurs. Its that they write in a conversational style rather than an academic one, hopefully to educate and promote an interest in philosophy.
I can't think of a better open amateur forum than the one I am posting in right now, as I type.
If you are reflecting Rick Lewis philosophy it is fucked-up. It is flawed.
That's not the Rick Lewis I know.
The Rick Lewis I know realizes that the hard copy of his magazine is doomed.
No one gives a flying fuck about the past professionals.
HERE at The Philosophy Now Forums is where the rubber meets the road.
We spit our working philosophy for the world to see AND TO REACT TO - in real time.
FUCK those old gas-bags. NOBODY listens to them any more.
This is where working philosophies turn.
We have entered a new age. An age where, with a slight tweak he will feature THIS forum online and he will make a profit here at The Philosophy Now Forums, right from the rip.

Yes it is, actually Bill. Arising is pretty much right in that the majority of the articles in the mag are written by professional philosophers, but in a style which hopefully is accessible not only to amateur philosophers but to complete newcomers to philosophy too. Our readers include amateur philosophers, professional philosophers, philosophy students and just anyone who has wandered up to the news-stand looking for something good to read.Bill Wiltrack wrote:.

What they have in common is that they want to read philosophy written by people who know a good deal about it, carefully selected and edited and fitted together into a (sometimes) coherent magazine. We get sent roughly 20 times as many articles as we are able to print, so we tend to be very selective indeed. The result is that most but not all of the articles that make it into print are by professional philosophers who hold teaching positions. The rest (about a third, I think) are written by graduate students, and by the very best amateur philosophers and independent scholars. It is the quality of the writing and the philosophical content which counts when we are selecting articles.
This forum, by contrast, isn't selective at all. The whole charm and attraction of the forum is that anyone can post here and that it is genuinely conversational rather than just being informal and conversational in style like the mag. Here you can try out ideas and get responses from some very clever and interesting people. That is really valuable. It has a downside which is that there is a lot of nonsense and noise as well, but I reckon that's a price worth paying. So I reckon this is a pretty good forum with some excellent posters - but if I replaced the current content of the mag with randomly selected forum threads, the mag would crash and burn in about 2 weeks flat!

Yes, I think the real challenge for anyone who writes for the magazine is to present fairly complicated ideas in a way that is meaningful to the non-philosopher. From what I have read I think the magazine does a pretty good job of this.

North London Poly looks o.k.
Bill is an artist and so he appreciated the artistic elements of a harsh reply, and not so much its meanness towards me.
I don´t bear Bill a grudge.
Yes, my spelling is not excellent. English is my third language. I should invest more effort into improving it.
This Oxford graduate boasting with his education does not sound like a gentleman to me at all.
He might have got some scholarship or ....
You are right, Arising, there is something strange about him. Something strangely unrelaxed.

God is Dead. The faith in God has gone as the faith in establishment Philosophy is gone, or as he says , is "flawed". Possibly because it is the old juggling act of Judeo Christian prejudice .
Someone who has lived a full life (Bill) is reading a philosophy which does not reflect the world as he knows it ,but is rather just a populist and political philosophy that fits into the square and round holes that society has foisted on us and basically he does not buy it.
As far as I understand it , the core philosophy that Bill understands is that
the organised world is highly politicized and that propaganda has supplanted truth.
Corruption is endemic in all our institutions .
Bill probably sees the world as did George Orwell .
What Bill is saying is that he does not need a student in a magazine, who is pontificating from ancient philosophers ,to tell him what life is all about in the real world.
His philosophy is here on the forum , reflected in his encounters with his arch rival The Chicken.
Jealousy, power plays, one-upmanship , the crass stupidity of those wishing to
make their views concrete by virtue of shoddy evidence and then, supported by partisan and twisted cliques .etc.
Such is life where truth is left in tatters.
So you say random articles from the forum would crash the magazine.
Well what Bill is saying is that the forum is the actuality of interpersonal life
and reflects life more acutely that scholarly articles which attempt to remodel
social phenomena.
To Bill, life is crudely exposed by experience and he does not need refined philosophical drama to teach him about life.
Well Rick ,I think what Bill Wiltrack is saying is that Philosophy is dead in the same way asYes it is, actually Bill................... the articles in the mag are written by professional philosophers,

You are AWESOME!
Well written. Well thought out.
I would much more prefer to see an article written by you in the Philosophy Now Magazine than by the hacks that coo Rick into being published in his magazine.
If the Philosophy Now Magazine were my magazine I wouldn't pay those fuckers a cent for their articles - just to degrade them and to show them that their opinion is no better than the opinions that are expressed by real philosophers; the ones who appear in the online Philosophy Now Forums.
If one of those cock-suckers EVER appeared here in the REAL forum we'd rip them another asshole.
WE RULE! WE fucking RULE.
WE are the real philosophers of today.
I challenge each & every one of the POS hacks that appear in this months Philosophy Now Magazine to appear here and stay here. Jump in the barrel & let's see how they fare.
