okay pick your favorite drug. you're high (or drunk) on that drug and you're down some cool city street in new york with ear buds in listening to Fagen's IGY (he's so polished) and walking in time, taking everything in. the city is magically transformed into something from the song, etc. you're high and happy af just trotting along to the beat observing the magnificent architecture of the sky scrapers. the sidewalks are packed with the working denizens of new york with their briefcases and smart phones. hot dog vendors, performers and street magicians. giant digital advertisement boards. even the homeless people have a place in the narrative. you're lost in a reverie and vibing hard af.

everybody who's been high (or drunk) af can and does do this. u could take the most brutish dolt of a person u could find, dose him up, put IGY on his ear buds and set him walking through New York city and he'd become a brilliant philosopher almost instantly. he wouldn't have the words for his vision, but he would have a vision nonetheless.

Fagen and Becker's old asses were still killin it here when they shoulda been in the lame stage of their career by then. Two Against Nature wuz the last one man. Everything after that is insufferably mediocre...but not in it's talent, in it's content; it's what very talented musicians do after six or seven albums when the passion is no longer there. Write quick songs to put an album out and get some income.
