Christian Morality Cannot Come from the Bible

Is there a God? If so, what is She like?

An earlier issue of "Philosophy Now" had articles which focused upon the Golden Rule and its various forms and restatements.

I like the restatement, "Treat yourself and others with kindness and respect", but I wouldn't expect everyone to agree with that restatement.

John shared the Luke 6:31 statement, "Do to others as you would have them do to you", a positive form that encourages positive action. Some people, however, may claim that this opens the door for aggressive missionary work, or, as previously mentioned, harmful acts committed by the mentally ill.

The golden rule, like most rules, is subject to close scrutiny, and I think some of its critics tend to miss its intent, treating it too literally or finding loopholes by taking the definitions of its terms to an extreme -- I'm echoing John's post here, immediately preceding. Whatever form it takes, even the simple "Do no harm", I think it's a tough rule to follow.
