The subject has never interested me. The psyche is an unpredictable place full of fear and dread, hopes and desires in the form of archetypes and images, either personal or communal. Why one would ever think of using it for the coherent, methodological fashion necessary for an investigation escapes me. It would be a waste of time when time is of the essence. Even if something in us is capable of looking through a wall or hearing a voice over hundreds of miles without any technological aid, we have not had the necessity to develop that function in us toward practical ends. Have isolated cases of individuals or groups doing so occurred? I believe so. But they would keep it to themselves, wouldn't they? Instead of wasting time attempting to share it within society, which is not interested in supporting such abilities, they would just be exploring it for themselves. Stories and knowledge of such abilities and phenomenas do filter through to the social order in one form or another, but they are invariably corrupt. We know them as myths and legends. The enduring human fascination with supernatural myth and legend is testament to the possibility of a reality within the supernatural modality. People are too chicken to go there though. The fear we have is not so much of that of possible injuries and difficult challenges, but that of losing connection with ordinary concerns and practicalities. That's fair enough, but I think we can loosen the halters more than we usually do.

Peter Garrett in a small venue at about 2am was not human anymore - his physique was very dominating and he perspired like a rain storm. One understands how gods were once upon a time derived from such public performers. He also knew how to really carry a message with a song - being a trained lawyer I suppose did that. Did you know he was federal environment minister in Australia until recently? They scaled down his portfolio because he never quite matched up with party-speak very well.

fwiw, I think my view of the matter is close to Chaz's. Awareness (or passive awareness) seems the minimum trait. The CNS (sustaining passive awareness) seems the corresponding minimum anatomy. At least to me.
Awareness maps to subjectivity and intentionality, hence to personal identity. In the mapping of personal identity criteria to entity classes in essay Ch. 17, you can see that subjectivity is the most restrictive criterion. And naturally its presence corresponds with the presence of a true CNS. Table 17.5 summarizes the chapter results:
The chapter's supporting material is dated. Like the essay itself, it's over a decade old. Also it's only a small sample from the literature. Much was omitted, and much has changed. So please feel free to suggest other, perhaps newer, professional materials -- especially those with the potential to rewrite Table 17.5.
