Hmm...Gary Childress wrote:There was a man named Socrates

Thinking he caused too much unrest
These accusations were all lies
Socrates was noble and wise
Rather than corrupting the youth
He taught only love of the truth
What did Socrates think of poets?

It's hard to tell with 100% certainty what Socrates may have thought of poets in general. Some of the Athenian poets of course mocked him. I sort of wonder if Socrates himself would have taken personal offense to it. I question whether holding a grudge or taking insults personally would be a sign of having wisdom. So perhaps idyllically I sort of imagine Socrates as not really caring that much. Of course I could very easily be wrong.marjoram_blues wrote:Hmm...Gary Childress wrote:There was a man named Socrates

Plato obviously didn't have much love for poets or their art in general. Not only did they mock his mentor but for Plato art was a 2nd level derivative of the most real. The form was that which one should most appreciate. The particular was a corrupt representation of that form and a work of art was a corrupt representation of the particular and therefore twice removed from ultimate reality. An alternative interpretation (which maybe stands the Platonic interpretation somewhat on its head) is that art is the creation of form and order out of chaos. That is perhaps a more romantic view of art.

Ode to Baloney for Breakfast
There are very few people who know me
With a great deal of familiarity
But those who do know I like baloney
It’s not a matter of austerity
I eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner
It really is a delectable treat
Perhaps very strange you may consider
I’m not very picky in what I eat
I like it in the form of a sandwich
And often fix it with a piece of cheese
You probably think it is outlandish
Now just pass the baloney if you please
There are very few people who know me
With a great deal of familiarity
But those who do know I like baloney
It’s not a matter of austerity

Baloney is all I hear each day
with more tomorrow on the way.
Those who tell it all eat steak
knowing well that their baloney's fake.

But then again...
It's hard to tell with 100% certainty...I could very easily be wrong. Obviously
I am twice or thrice removed from reality.
