It's just obvious. I don't think it requires 'studies' unless that's to spell it out to morons who think it's a good idea to do it. I don't think there are any studies on whether or not removing the hands of a concert pianist will affect their ability to play the piano...

Studies are how you measure something objectively, instead of relying on stories and anecdotes.

Then you can decide if you want it or you don't want it based on rational reasons.

Everything in life is a tradeoff, and you need to know what you are trading.
