Yes indeed it is known, that there are life forms without a brain that nevertheless are conscious, also organisms that have a simple ganglion which later in evolutionary development becomes a brain stem, the brain stem then developing into a full brain. The brain developed from the inside out thus indicating the earliest parts such as the R complex belonging to our reptilian ancestors. So no, it is not an utter mystery it is the evolutionary development of eons.

If 'consciousness' is nothing more that just 'being aware', then 'the mind' is also just 'being aware', correct?
Now, you might say that 'consciousness' is NOT 'being aware', which, if you were to, then I would ask you what is 'consciousness', to you, EXACTLY?

Consciousness is being aware of yourself in the world, as in what can sustain or undermine your being. Even a cockroach is fearful of things that might harm it, or conditions that it could not survive within.

The mind cannot be created or destroyed. Subconscious mind tasks are huge, from memory, creating quale, etc.

The mind cannot be created or destroyed is a nonsense statement, it is destroyed everyday and the fact that all things are temporal in nature makes your statement absurd.
This is the argument for the immortality of the mind (the mind cannot be destroyed):

That explains the evolution of the brain. It doesn't explain where the mind came from.
You have equated the mind to the brain. But the brain is not aware.
