The 2005 movie was a critical and commercial success, but only to those who had not seen or read the earlier versions. By itself it was OK, but compared to the original it was rubbish.

They went directly from Magrathea to the Restaurant at the end of the Universe without any mention of the Vogon attack or the chamber that showed the individual in relation to the Universe. After they crashed on early Earth there was no mention of the trip to the coast, Arthur and Ford just set off on a raft and returned, without showing anything about the trip itself.
