Seriously, almost no progress in workers rights and safety would ever have been made without unions. In the coalmines of industrial England, 12-year-old boys already suffered from black lung; on the construction of Canadian railway bridges, one death every for 10 feet was standard collateral damage; in USian sweatshops, teenaged girls were paid starvation wages and sexually abused by foremen.... much as they are now, in the post-union-busting era.

All human organizations is prone to bureaucracy, over-reaching and corruption; the larger it is, the more unnecessary complications creep in; the more money passes through it, the more will stick to unscrupulous hands; the more power leaders wield, the greater their sense of entitlement. That doesn't mean we shouldn't ever organize anything; it just means the membership needs to stay awake and pay attention.

I have another idea...what if we dropped ALL tariffs and allowed those POOR employers to open shops in communist countries that don't protect our environment and can use indentured servants to perform their labor for free?

- and then ship those products half-way around the world back to us using cargo carriers that are given huge tax breaks & deep discounts on the fuel they use and then we can export all our wealth while owning nothing but our opinions...that are eventually made meaningless by a government that is run by corporation? How's that sound?
