Religion was the main repository for all knowledge, and during the dark ages it was the only place where knowledge was preserved. People who were educated were educated by the church, it has only been recently that secular education has been available.
Yes. When I wrote about the dichotomies, one of the points was how St. Augustine, around 500 BCE, decided that knowledge was under the authority of the church. He proclaimed that all the people needed was faith in God; the church would take care of the rest. Although I can not say that this proclamation ushered in the Dark Ages, it certainly helped us to keep to our seats in those dark years.

St. Aquinas, et al, showed up almost a thousand years later and convinced the church to allow science. I believe that this was preempted by the Crusaders, as they rediscovered some of Plato's work while on crusade, creating a renewed interest in Aristotle's work.

When I stated that religion is the study of consciousness, I did not state that it only studied consciousness. I, in no way, implied that I believe religion is some repository for all the pure and good that is God and consciousness. The fact remains that there is no other study, there is no other source, religion is the only place where one can go to study consciousness. The only other source is introspective study, which is basically worthless because it has to work through the rational subjective mind.

This is what Descartes did. I listened to his Mediations on tape and thought that I had never heard a more logical, precise, eloquent argument in my life. It explained that God existed and Descartes existed; it was wonderful; it was also garbage. I think that is when I came to the realization that rationalization was worthless when dealing with an unknown. No matter how precise, logical, or elegant the argument, it is still swayed by the motivation of the rational mind making that argument. Critical thinking is better.

This discussion exemplifies my problems in discussing consciousness. The people that I have met in these forums are so involved in the debate between science and religion that they can't think anymore. If I say something that seems to respect science, then I am assumed to be on that side; if I say something that respects religion, then I am assumed to be on that side. I am on neither side, I respect both science and religion for the work that they do. I am a philosopher, who studies consciousness, and consciousness is a huge subject that is both subjective and objective. It is also a very difficult subject to comprehend, so unless one is a fool, one would look to all sources to gain an understanding of consciousness.

I'll give you an example. I was contemplating what causes a mind to be an individual entity, when someone brought up the subject of ghosts (paranormal), then I considered psychology's studies about the divisions and movement of mind (science) and compared that information to the animals that can be used as a food source in the Old Testament (religion) and the bonding that is created between minds that I know of (personal experience). From these sources, I found a common thread that may explain about the formation of a mind and may also let us learn which species have mind and which do not. Who do you think that I could discuss this with? Is there anyone who could control their biases about science, religion, and the paranormal long enough to actually think about it? So far the answer is no.

That was my point. Psychology is a new study, but consciousness has been studied for tens of thousands of years, and the people studying consciousness have been associated with religion.

Plato would be an exception as he obviously studied consciousness, but it was predominantly studied by religions.

That is why I said that religion is the study of consciousness.

As far as I know there are two studies that could be interpreted as studies of consciousness; one is psychology, rather new; the other is religions, at least 40,000 years old. When I say religions, I mean the religions that are here today and the religions of the past, which would include witch doctors, shamans, theologists, and monks--ALL OF THEM.

Gee

Just because psychology was labeled and codified 100 years ago does not mean that people were not studying these processes of the mind before that. There is no reason to believe that Buddhists and even earlier thinkers were not contemplating these issues that now are brought under the study called psychology. People have been looking at the stars for many thousands of years but astronomy is only a recent dicipline of science, whold you suggest that because men did not call it astronomy, people were not studying the stars?
Indeed.

For example, two of the greatest writers in Philosophy on the subject of PSYCHOLOGY are Hume and Locke.
Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding
and Hume's AN ENQUIRY concerning HUMAN UNDERSTANDING, are both regarded primary as works of Psychology.
... And yet neither Hume not Locke use the word a single time.

Bk. II of the Treatise was not only valuable as an independent essay in psychology, and interesting from its wealth of observation and illustration, but also important from its preliminary treatment of questions which were going to be of vital importance in Bk. III,...

Mick;

Because of my position on consciousness, it is very difficult for me to defend a person related to religion, as people always jump to assumptions. But that does not mean that I can not appreciate an intelligent fair-minded response.

Thank you for this addition to my thread. I suspect that Mick may actually "think", which is a rare and valuable thing.

Yes! Exactly. This is the second time you have done this for me. You read my words, roll them around in your mind, and spit out what I mean in one neat concise sentence--after I have been rambling around the point for five or six paragraphs.

You really are good at getting to the bare bones of the matter, and I suspect that you are also good at getting to the truth. You are indeed a philosopher, no matter whether or not you have a degree.

Intelligent discussion on any of the following topics, and probably a dozen more that I have forgotten to list, as they relate to consciousness, would be appreciated. If anyone has information on any of these subjects, please refer me to a thread or PM me or e-mail me with your thoughts. If you have an interest, please let me know what it is, and I will start a thread.

1. The difference between life and AI. Is it mostly about "want"? I think so.

2. Levels of consciousness/awareness in species and how this can be determined.

3. Panpsychism--what is missing from this idea?

4. Hormones, delusions, and consciousness--is there a connection?

5. Bacteria and endospores--are they aware?

6. Any information regarding communication in other species.

7. What are pheromones? How do they work?

8. What is anthropomorphism really? How does it work? Emotional memory v standard memory.

9. How Christianity divided the tangible from the intangible. Should we have done this?

10. Can the Bible teach us anything about consciousness? What about the rules in the Bible for eating meat? Or Eve's punishment as regards child birth. Are they really about consciousness?

11. What religions are more in line with a philosophical view of consciousness? Is consciousness God? Is soul mind? Dr. Robert G. Brown.

12. Are souls, personal space, and auras really the same thing?

13. Has anyone read Dr. Ian Stevenson's work on reincarnation? Is reincarnation possible?

14. Is the nervous system internal and instincts external? Why?

15. Is consciousness internal or external? Or both? Is it something that is real? Does it have properties? Do some species hibernate because of consciousness?

16. What are ghosts, demons and angels, apparitions, and poltergeists? Are these the same thing?

17. What is the difference between prophesies and premonitions? Can this be real?

18. Mind formation and emotion is there a connection?

19. Emotion is the motivator, the mover, the thing that causes happening.

20. Ignacio Matte Blanco, or anyone else who has studied the subconscious mind.

21. Can the intangible affect the tangible? Are we talking power or influence?

22. Did the ancients know more than we do now about consciousness?

23. What are instincts? Intuition? Hunches? Motor reflex? What defines the difference?

24. Herding, flocking, schooling, and swarming species as they relate to the "mob" mentality. How does it work? Pheromones? Auras?

25. Is consciousness a pure thing, or is it made up of components?

Can all of these things be related to consciousness? Yes, I think so, and many of them interrelate. I listed them separately because that is how I find them in other people's posts, and I wanted to make sure that I covered areas that might not be understood as being related. Consciousness is a huge barely tapped subject. It is life, but what causes life? What is consciousness, really?

1. The difference between life and AI. Is it mostly about "want"? I think so.

Please elaborate...

2. Levels of consciousness/awareness in species and how this can be determined.

Unsure what you mean here.

3. Panpsychism--what is missing from this idea?

If this is how you define it: The term "panpsychism" has its origins with the term pan, meaning "throughout" or "everywhere", and psyche, meaning "soul" as the unifying center of the mental life of us humans and other living creatures." I believe every living thing has a soul that makes it 'alive.' When it dies the soul goes back to the other side.

4. Hormones, delusions, and consciousness--is there a connection?

Not so much hormones, but I can see a correlation between delusions and consciousness, with the thought of them being inversely proportional.

5. Bacteria and endospores--are they aware?

No. They do not have consciousness. They simply exist.

6. Any information regarding communication in other species.

They do it? Of course. Not really interested in studying animals.

7. What are pheromones? How do they work?

Sex hormones? Subtly.

8. What is anthropomorphism really? How does it work? Emotional memory v standard memory.

Ethnocentrism, in a word. Memory is complex. There is also body memory.

9. How Christianity divided the tangible from the intangible. Should we have done this?

Christianity united the tangible with the intangible, via faith in Jesus Christ.

10. Can the Bible teach us anything about consciousness? What about the rules in the Bible for eating meat? Or Eve's punishment as regards child birth. Are they really about consciousness?

It's all about consciousness, isn't it? Being more conscious of choices to walk with God, for example. Meat rules = OT , not sure. Child birth hurts; babies shouldn't come too easily--we have to work for it. :)

11. What religions are more in line with a philosophical view of consciousness? Is consciousness God? Is soul mind? Dr. Robert G. Brown.

God is everything. If we are LUCKY, we will have consciousness of Him, through His grace. Soul is life force, in us and other living things, only while we are alive.

12. Are souls, personal space, and auras really the same thing?

Auras are a myth, just like ghosts and psychic 'readings.' Personal space is my zone, which you don't wanna invade. :D

13. Has anyone read Dr. Ian Stevenson's work on reincarnation? Is reincarnation possible?

My take on reincarnation is that all our souls return to one giant pulsing light energy which is God, and comes back to infuse life into another piece of matter as needed. I do not believe it is specific to a certain person--past, present, or future.

14. Is the nervous system internal and instincts external? Why?

I do not understand the question. Both are innate.

15. Is consciousness internal or external? Or both? Is it something that is real? Does it have properties? Do some species hibernate because of consciousness?

Consciousness is a function of our mind, if we are lucky enough to attain it. It is real, the most real we can emotionally be. Species hibernate not from consciousness, which is a higher-minded faculty, but because of primitive instincts for survival and coding.

16. What are ghosts, demons and angels, apparitions, and poltergeists? Are these the same thing?

Don't really believe in all these. :/

17. What is the difference between prophesies and premonitions? Can this be real?

If it's from God, yes.

18. Mind formation and emotion is there a connection?

Perhaps. How we feel and emote is related to nature and nurture.

19. Emotion is the motivator, the mover, the thing that causes happening.

Not necessarily. And the more reliable motivator is cognitive certitude.

Pheromones? Auras?

Consciousness is awareness. It has a positive connotation because with it comes truth. And truth is good.

Actually I believe hormones work within the body, and phermones are chemical messangers that are emmited from the body like a scent or smell. They are mostly subtle and not consciously noticed, but convey some message to another living thing, and not always related to sex. I have heard the expression that some animals, Usually predators, can smell fear, and this would be the effect of phermones.

One example, just to start. Emotions are usually described as intangible, but they can definately effect the tantible body. Usually it is influence but sometimes strong emotions can have real power over a persons actions.

Honey Bees can communicate the location of flowers to the hive by 'dancing' and this dance has been observed and decoded to the point where researchers can reproduce the message. In one experiment in an enclosed area they put out fresh flowers and after a scout had found them and went back to the hive the researchers covered the sky from view including anything overhead like the tops of trees. The Bees from the hive could not then find the flowers even though other times they had no trouble finding them. The Bees apparently memorized a 'sky'map' that they used to navagate by.

Gee,
1. The difference between life and AI. Is it mostly about "want"? I think so.

What AI?

2. Levels of consciousness/awareness in species and how this can be determined.

You can't determine the levels of consciousness of other species relative to your own?

3. Panpsychism--what is missing from this idea?

What is your understanding of this idea?

Its not whats missing its what it assumes, I think it adds nothing to the things it thinks are a problem.

4. Hormones, delusions, and consciousness--is there a connection?

Yes, the body.

5. Bacteria and endospores--are they aware?

Of what? In what sense "aware"?

6. Any information regarding communication in other species.

Such as?

7. What are pheromones? How do they work?

In insects we thing its chemical receptors. In humans the jury is out that they have much effect at all.

8. What is anthropomorphism really? How does it work? Emotional memory v standard memory.

Really? Its the view that its sometimes a mistake to attribute human attributes to other objects.

Whats "emotional memory"?

9. How Christianity divided the tangible from the intangible. Should we have done this?

What do you mean by this? Was it even a rational choice?

10. Can the Bible teach us anything about consciousness? What about the rules in the Bible for eating meat? Or Eve's punishment as regards child birth. Are they really about consciousness?

No, but it can teach us much about human behaviour with respect to belief.

How do you think such things are about consciousness?

11. What religions are more in line with a philosophical view of consciousness? Is consciousness God? Is soul mind? Dr. Robert G. Brown.

Buddhism I guess as its more a philosophy rather than a religion.

What 'God'?

What "soul'?

12. Are souls, personal space, and auras really the same thing?

No, the first and last are pretty much non-existent but the middle one is important.

13. Has anyone read Dr. Ian Stevenson's work on reincarnation? Is reincarnation possible?

Nope and very doubtful.

14. Is the nervous system internal and instincts external? Why?

What do you mean by this? The CNS is obviously internal in many(all?) creatures and 'instincts' are, in part, learned responses of the CNS but with respect to external data.

15. Is consciousness internal or external? Or both? Is it something that is real? Does it have properties? Do some species hibernate because of consciousness?

No, some hibernate due to an evolutionary success when dealing with body energy expenditure versus's available food resource.

What do you mean by "consciousness"? To me its to be a body with sensors in an external world.

16. What are ghosts, demons and angels, apparitions, and poltergeists? Are these the same thing?

Yes and no, do you think them real?

17. What is the difference between prophesies and premonitions? Can this be real?

Can what be real? The difference between the definitions or that they do what they claim?

18. Mind formation and emotion is there a connection?

Yes, the Body. What do you mean by "emotion"?

19. Emotion is the motivator, the mover, the thing that causes happening.

Only if you allow it to or you're not aware that this is your preferred way of thinking.

20. Ignacio Matte Blanco, or anyone else who has studied the subconscious mind.

Why just one?

21. Can the intangible affect the tangible?

By definition, no.

Are we talking power or influence?

Give me an example?

22. Did the ancients know more than we do now about consciousness?

Again, what do you mean by "consciousness"?

Which ancients? The Greeks and Romans could still teach us a thing or two about memory.

23. What are instincts? Intuition? Hunches? Motor reflex? What defines the difference?

Motor reflex pretty much by-passes the first three, although I'm not sure theres much difference between the three. What do you mean by them?

24. Herding, flocking, schooling, and swarming species as they relate to the "mob" mentality. How does it work? Pheromones? Auras?

With the insects it appears to be chemical, with a large chunk of the others its eyesight and also pressure.

25. Is consciousness a pure thing, or is it made up of components?

Its the being of a body with senses in an external environment.

Its really being a body with senses in an external environment. But it can get more complicated depending upon the dynamics or interactions of the internal subsystems. Add a language and it gets real knotty.

Eve's 'punishment?' of childbirth is a mythological explination of a natural event.]
