In regards to baby in the tummy, technology can easily distinguish life from death.
The umbilicus connecting fetus to placenta just like the cord connecting that patient tothe life support machine. It's biological life support for the fetus. It is exactly the same problem. To take an extreme example (this one WOULD be detectable) the fetus had not developed lungs.

Who thinks that a person on a ventilator has the sort of connection to the ventilator as a mother connected to the fetus with an umbilical chord?
