It doesn't help that this "new" discovery is repeatedly compared to a slide rule in the text. I have looked this up and it seems to be some sort of mechanical calculator for very small sums that was rendered obsolete by the sin cos and tan buttons on the calculators we had at school.

Seriously, a lot of people do infomercials when their beliefs don't match already established ones. It might be a viable option.

No Gary, I really do hope that this knowledge will help you. I was once depressed but this knowledge really saved my life. I'm not just saying it to get a positive response. I'm telling the God's honest truth. In fact, this knowledge allowed me to be friends with my ex-husband. That is saying something. :)

Of course you didn't even have that much self control. Who is surprised really? And after complaining about bad language when I used the word "shit" you've really let yourself go there you naughty little potty mouth.

The "new" "discovery" is not very new and not at all discovered. It's riddled with out of date references and one of those is the slide rule, which crops up a lot in your book. Have you not read it?

There's also the weird reliance on Will Durant as a stand-in for all philosophers, I had to look him up as well. He's not really a philosopher, more of a commentator and another forgotten relic of the mid 20th C. Along with the slide rule and ... well... you and your book.

How long were you depressed for? Was it due to something in particular, like the breakup with your husband? Or was it since childhood?

To be be very honest, I was always a sensitive child, which probably led to my confusion about my place in the world. I always felt I was inferior and therefore had to compete against this monster (society) that told me I was not good enough. That was my interpretation as a young girl. This monster followed me throughout my young life and colored my every move.

I was a very sensitive child also. I was severely depressed most of my childhood. Then probably had what amounted to mania in college. In the middle of college I had a psychosis and have been on anti-psychotics since. Not a lot of fun, but I've tried going off them a number of times and always ended up back in the psych hospital after a while.

I truly feel for your pain. We are kindred souls that can only understand if you’ve been through hell. But it’s not over, not by a long shot!

Fair enough. What are you suggesting I do to break out of my current situation?

Take a very detailed inventory of your thoughts and beliefs, which is a very important first step to figure out where they originated and when you accepted the lie that denied you happuness.

I have no idea. That is for you to figure out. You are not beyond hope! That’s what the knowledge of determinism has given me. It was a gift I can never pay back.

If you have no idea what lie I have accepted, then how do you know I've accepted a lie? Surely you must have some idea what lie I've accepted.

Many messages children were given by their parents or society in general were untruths. Or, we were hurt in some way that stayed with us that even as adults, we cannot forgive.
