I think if you could prove that there was some premeditation, by inference, that would be a solid test for sentience. Essentially intentionality or forethought.

Nah. There is no solid test for sentience.
The closest I could come to, is whether this 'entity' returned each afternoon for me smacking it around again with a claw hammer.
