I think we have too much hysteria about it, we already alter ourselves with surgery, pills, medication, photoshop, makeup ..etc why shouldn't we allow ourselves to enhance us via genetics?

We can erradicate many genetic diseases like Alzenheimer, Fibromylagy, Sklerosis ..etc, imo those who oppose genetic designerbabies are irrational people.

Not true according to what I've learned, which is that many of these diseases come from chemicals used in processed foods, and environmental contamination.

Some American academic did a study not very long ago on Romanian orphans. Seems, if they're placed in quality foster care before age two, they have a good chance of achieving normal social adjustment and intellectual development. After three, they can't. So, just go ahead and write off all the three-year-olds in the world that have been deprived of love.

Actually, I was hoping for a bit of whimsy, rather than bloody depressing reality. But wtf, eh?

Yes I saw a documentary on those Romanian orphans. They said that the fact that they were never touched or interacted with in a playful loving manner was the problem. It seems the orphanages were stagnant, with row after row of cribs, treated like shelves in a stock room. They would simply be fed, changed and left to themselves, which went on for years.

They even interviewed an adult male that was there for his first few years, he couldn't function very well with other people, was very stoic, emotionless. Actually his facial expression was a bit scary. It's a shame that humans treat infants that way!

So like we really need designer babies?
Money making opportunities abound, and if not, we'll cook up some whacked out way to ensure they do.

Yes and no, bad foods and chemicals can enhance the effect of the illness, or cause it, but our ancestors also had these illnesses in the stone age with no industrial chemicals.

I agree with you that too much Ritalin has been prescribed. But I will say that I have a dear friend who's son could not concentrate at all in school. The teachers practically begged her to put him on Ritalin because not only was he not paying attention, they had to peel him off the walls...they had no time to teach!

After they put him on Ritalin his grades went up and he was able to concentrate. A few years later...they decided to take him off it. His grades plummeted from A's and B's to D's and f's...he could not concentrate on the task at hand. So they put him back on it and he's getting A's and B's.

I wish someone would have put me on it when I was in grade school. I might have been able to learn more. I wanted so badly to learn. Before each class I would tell myself to pay attention...focus. not even 10 minutes into the lesson I was daydreaming...in a daze..what ever you want to call it. For the life of me I could not pay attention no matter how hard I tried. I still can't. It's an awful feeling. You are so very interested in the lesson...but your mind won't let you stay focused.

I'm not saying I had ADHD, I'm just saying I would love a miracle drug that would allow me to be able to absorb knowledge.

Well, coming from someone who had 'no problems' in art class....I can tell you this: The reason I had no problems in art class was not because 'I was interested' in the class, but rather because I could have taught the class. There was nothing to learn. I didn't need a teacher. The teacher was a nuisance. She/he would drone on in the background while I did my thing. What's to teach? I did not need to pay attention to gain knowledge. I was given crayons, paints, clay way before I entered school and left to my own devices.

Children usually already have some knowledge and aptitude for a subject before they ever even begin school. I don't think these "studies" take that into account.

How would you account for all the classes like English, history, government, language, etc. that I was sincerely interested in, but could not pay attention to?

We all want a drug to make life 'easier'. It doesn't work like that. There's no such thing. It might make life easier for the stupid bitch mothers and incompetent teachers who don't mind giving a dangerous, addictive drug to children for no reason other than that they find it difficult to 'handle' active, bored little boys. It would be interesting to know how many of these children who grew up on Ritalin faired well vs. those who became drug addicted adults.
