Are you on any social media, or web-sites that specialize in showcasing the kind of work you do? That would be very useful: contact with people who have a similar interest and experience ( - trust me, they have
all been told they're no good, even the most successful) and feedback on from people who know what they're looking at. Those on-line communities (artists, poets, designers, musicians) are more often supportive than jealous and negative; they can really boost your morale sometimes. Even if they don't, you can see that many, many others are in a similar situation, and maybe feel a bit less alone. Even better would be finding an actual community of people you can touch and have a beer with. They, too, exist but are harder to find. (I would look at the bulletin boards at the public library and art gallery. Ours have a rack for brochures and free publications by all kinds of local groups. Costs nothing to check their events page for some show, festival or meeting you might want to attend.)
But I also wouldn't hang my entire happiness on success at my chosen work.
Well, to be honest, I
couldn't - I've failed at so many, I should be miserable.
But I've lucked out in friends and lovers, pets and adventures.
