The thought of immortality alone would be enough to freak most people out.

What is the manner of the immortality, btw?
What is the detail? These hypotheticals are usually meaningless without the substance.

Immortality is an idiotic proposition for these reasons
Oh! Then I agree, it's a stupid thought as I thought people were talking about living forever in the sense of removing death by senescence.

Yes immortality would be a great boon to space exploration however consider humankind's bigotry. While humankind would be able to reach other worlds with the assurity of deathlessness we would quickly become a plaque to other worlds with our selfishness; ruthlessness and unquenchable greed.
Until we as a species can truly learn to accept and respect each other humans have no business on other worlds interacting with extraterrestrials.

What on earth makes you think they've not climbed the evolutionary tree in pretty much the same manner?

That's an excellent thought Arising. And a troubling one. Can you imagine the carnage resulting from the interation of two greedy; bigoted races with little to no regard for the environmental damage they cause? We could wind up the losers in that war; especially if they have advantages in technology over us. Then our immortality will seem like a curse as we're studied like lab rats if the other side isn't immortal as well or we could very well wind up spending the rest of eternity as slaves if the other race practices that loathsome behavior.

Absolutely. In a great two-parter from 'Xena', Callisto is a maimed immortal, seeking a higher godhood through Ambrosia, that she may heal.

Totally.
