Hello IC

So you're a philosophically inclined christian who wishes to be judged on current form, rather than any historical academic achievements. So far, so benign. Clearly you irritate some other contributors, frankly, who doesn't? Personally I think Immanuel Can is a ghastly pun, but I can't hold that against you. What puzzles me is that if Immanuel Can, why does he need you as a conduit? More to the point; what is the special access you have that justifies you presenting your views under that heading?

It's my pleasure to meet you. I would tell you more about myself, but I'm being deliberately uninformative about that at the moment. I'm trying to let people judge me on the truth or falsehood of what I happen to say; otherwise, I'd be happy to share more details with someone as pleasant and forthcoming as you.

I believe that from reading other posts on other threads I have a discovered an apparent contradiction. You state that you are being deliberately uninformative about yourself, wanting to be judged on the content of your posts. However it can be seen from several other posts that your user I.D. has great significance and in fact carries a great deal of baggage with it. Some user I.D.'s are more whimsical, some are misleading, and some like yours convey a great deal about the user. I will, of course, let it to you to respond, or not.

On the other hand, you have Bob the Baptist, the new guru, the modern messiah, and the wizard of Ouzo, a prophet on all things spiritual, political and economic, who isn't afraid to state his full real name, Robert Merlin Evenson, which, as I have said before, adds up to the Unholy Trinity of Satan, False Prophet and Beast in English gematria simplex (A=1 to Z=26).

Thedoc and uwot:

Perhaps I can answer you both at once.

"Need"? The Supreme Being "need" me? Of course not. :)

My views are my own, of course. And I don't imagine I'm speaking on behalf of anyone but myself. At the same time, I'm a Christian philosopher which, if it means anything, must mean that that fact does impinge importantly on my thinking. The ontology that grounds all my thinking takes (at least the hypothesis of) the existence of the Supreme Being into consideration. Should I reveal that?

I suppose I could present myself as merely a *neutral* philosopher, and operate in "stealth mode"; but that wouldn't be a full picture. The God hypothesis is key to my thinking, such as it is.

However, please don't suppose I am presenting myself as "under the heading" of the Supreme Being for the purpose of lending weight to my views. After all, despite the initial I do not ever call myself "I Can."

Many Christian theologians are at the same time excellent thinkers and philosophers. I have no prejudices.

Some Christian sects and a whole lot of people claiming to be "enlightened" appear to me to be wolves in sheep costumes. And then I hear my guardian angel whispering into my ear: It´s time to withdraw.

Every mind should be given a fair chance to express itself.
One hearing at least.

Even for Tom Cruise.

Socrates said he knew nothing.
wasn't it more of a passive agressive ignorance of a know it all?
But Immanuel can.
is this intended to be some sort of philosophical pun about how iwth god all things are possible

If I remember correctly, you are operating a farm, and tractor maintenance would be infintely more valuable that an understanding of Kant, unless Kant can tell you how to grow corn and hay. Of course you could always use horses, just a bit more complicated. When I was young my neighbor used a team of horses to work his farm, and I remember taking hay into the barn that way. The youngest boy and I were on top of the hay wagon tamping it down while the older boys loaded the wagon with pitch forks.

my brother and i and our significant others are in the process of taking over farm operations from elderly relatives

actually kant is very useful for tractor repair

it can be a frustrating process and occasionally i get an urge to smash things - and asking 'what would Kant do' can help

after all, it is only a contingent, and thus philosophically unimportant fact that he did not know how to repair tractors

asking 'what would jesus do' does not really work, i can picture him cursing the tractor and it becoming a pile of rust

Mount a wagon hitch on the front of your tractor, I can remember trying to back a wagon of hay into the barn with a rear mounted hitch, and then my uncle got a tractor with a hitch on the front. You wouldn't believe the difference until you try it yourself.

a pair of japanese tourtists with two little adorable japanese children showed up at our farm today looking for horseback riding lessons

i have no idea how they got the idea that we offer this service (we do not) or even what led them our way

but we are not ones to turn away paying clients so we were able to improvise, and they took lots of pictures and promised to send their friends our way

we have two horses

one elderly mare who was around during the nixon administration who refuses to let adults ride her - but children are ok

and an extremely phlegmatic gelding who barely missed the nixon administration who is amazing when ridden by someone equally phlegmatic - but really does not like people getting excited - he reacts to that by slowing down
