Geoffrey Hinton is considered a godfather of artificial intelligence, having championed machine learning decades before it became mainstream. As chatbots like ChatGPT bring his work to widespread attention, we spoke to Hinton about the past, present and future of AI. CBS Saturday Morning's Brook Silva-Braga interviewed him at the Vector Institute in Toronto on March 1, 2023.
An interview with Geoffrey Hinton -- who worked for years on AI.

The award winning AI researcher, Hinton above in AJs post, has now now dropped out of the research because he thinks it is too dangerous. During this newcast they interview another research who supports the conclusions Hinton has and says there are others in the field who are very concerned...

And this is an initiative that includes thousands of experts who want a pause in AI research.

Yes saw this on BBC https://youtu.be/DsBGaHywRhs

Thing is ridiculous that he couldn't see this coming - what a wanker. On the one hand you want to build a nuclear bomb, on the other hand, you don't want it to explode.

Bullshit.

The think with AI that concerns ME...is that AI - cold logic simulated intelligence has NO concern, no empathy, no consciousness, no ability for qualia to comprehend pain etc...

THAT..is the concern the likes of Hinton and all the others should have...but was not mentioned - maybe it sounds too much like Reece in Terminator!!

The thing that scares me is that you're not going to get some open letter in China. And anyone like Hinton there, who decides there's a problem, well, they may drop out - I'm sure a Chinese scientist could realize there is a real danger and have a call of conscience - but the research is not going to stop and that guy will probably just disappear. Likewise in private firms, these concerns will be met with a shrug. So, we've got a lot of agents in the game and most of them are going to keep going. As it will with genetic modification and products and nanotech, until somebody messes up. At that point we can just hope something survives.

We must first know what Mr. Stenson looks like sir.

Here's a photograph of him. It's the only one I have!

What the ... it's a baby's picture!

Yes, Stenson when he was 8 months old, 1999 it was. April 14th, at his house, it was sunny, windy ...

Sir, sir, we can't find Mr. Stenson like this! We need a photograph that's at most 2 years old. Is this some kinda prank?! If it is we know what to do with people like you ... wasting police time, the nerve!!

No, no, not a prank! Mr. Stenson hasn't come home since Tuesday, that's 4 days ago. Please help, Mr. Stenson is a good man! I know something terrible has happened to him, oh!

Miss, miss, calm down. There, there. I can't help you ... help me help you. I will ask you a series of questions and you must answer them. Shall we begin?

Ok!

There's a pet cat, yes?

Indeed officer, there is. Tom!

When you last saw Tom, did it groom itself and if it did, did it start from the arms or legs or ...?

I don't know ... that! All I remember is I saw Tom run across the road, chasing some pigeons.

It's alright miss, don't worry. Next question. The doorbell, did you notice anything odd about it? You rang the bell, yes?

I did officer but ...

You rang the bell but ... it was the same ... bird chirps?

What does all this have to do with Mr. Stenson. It doesn't make sense to me at all, oh!

Patience, patience, miss. How many birds would you say were there ... from the doorbell?

Is this a prank officer?! What kinda questions are these?!

Miss, how many birds?

Two, four, nine, god knows!!

Excellent! Every question you answer will take us that much closer to solving this case. I'd say, just a policeman's hunch, Mr. Stenson will be found in the next 2 days. The last question. How much water did you drink on Thursday, last week?

Why would how many ...

Answer, miss, answer. I'll make it easier for you, 2,341.78 mL or 1,7632 mL?

8 cups, 5, 7, I don't know.

Magnifique! Mr. Stenson will be back in his house by 8:00 PM the day after tomorrow. Go home now miss and rest. The case is solved!
