How important are conductors for orchestras and other music groups?

I know they can control the speed the orchestra plays at and other things. Can an orchestra do without a conductor?

A well known piece of music can certainly be played by an orchestra without a conductor but it will be a typical interpretation, only a conductor can put a different interpretation on a piece of music and make it unique.

When I was young all the buses had conductors and the driver just drove the bus. Now the driver has to collect the fares as well as drive but from the point of view of the passenger the journey is pretty much the same as it always was. Then again, I don't suppose you want your bus journey to be unique, most people actually count on it being exactly the same every time.

Thamkyou for reminding me why I don't usually look at your posts. And you totally overlooked my reference to music and not to a bus. Actually the relationship of the conductor to an orchestra is more like the position of a conductor on a train, the conductor is the boss.

BTW, buses usually play (if they play any at all) canned music described as Elevator Music and the recording orchestra usually has a conductor.

Our congregation had the opportunity to obtain a pipe organ but the cost of moving it and the additional rooms needed for the pipes was more than we could afford, so we settled for a Sohmer model 57.
