Konstantin Kisin has beautifully explained what's wrong with Canadian politics (except he said it about British politics, from which Canadian derived). He said, "They are like people who think they can save the Titanic by constantly changing captains...but never changing course."
They had Liberal regimes that behaved like Socialists. They have a national-socialist party and a green party -- nobody really votes for either. They have had Conservative governments that behaved like Liberals. They had Trudeau, who could do nothing because he knew nothing. They have Carney, who hasn't done anything really at all...except antagonize the Americans.
The ship keeps sailing in the same direction, because Canadians are the ultimate "go-alongs," and no longer have any vision, direction or principles to which they will commit.
Quebec, the perpetually privileged and aggrieved, gets most of the money and power, and yet continues to rumble about Separatism. Ontario sees itself as the core of Canada, and everybody else as peripheral...except Quebec.
The West is still wounded and angry, but too afraid to force a change.
The Left Coast is still Left.
The Maritimes remain poor and distant cousins, largely ignored and like Alberta, over-regulated so they cannot take advantage of their oil and other resources.
Canada continues to believe that it is a noble place -- much better than its more affluent cousins to the south, but only morally, not situationally -- and continues to believe that whatever happens in the larger world, Canada will always be Canada.
We shall see if they're right. But between their above-replacement rate of migration and their rate of murdering their own citizens, between the interests of China and Europe, between their nationalists and their growing separatist factions...nothing is sure forever.
