Why do you think it's progress?
("Because it's only fair" is not an answer.)
First it's definition, so we can get the truest sense of the word:
progress
[n. prog-res, -ruh s or, esp. British, proh-gres; v. pruh-gres]
noun
1. a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage: the progress of a student toward a degree.
2. developmental activity in science, technology, etc., especially with reference to the commercial opportunities created thereby or to the promotion of the material well-being of the public through the goods, techniques, or facilities created.
3. advancement in general.
4. growth or development; continuous improvement: He shows progress in his muscular coordination.
5. the development of an individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level.
6. Biology. increasing differentiation and perfection in the course of ontogeny or phylogeny.
7. forward or onward movement: the progress of the planets.
verb (used without object), progress
10. to go forward or onward in space or time: The wagon train progressed through the valley. As the play progressed, the leading man grew more inaudible.
11. to grow or develop, as in complexity, scope, or severity; advance: Are you progressing in your piano studies? The disease progressed slowly.
Idioms
12. in progress, going on; under way; being done; happening: The meeting was already in progress.
Now my rationalization: Once, no life existed at all. As the universe proceeded to change, it's many constituents came together to form what is known as life. This life was once primitive, 'taking' what it 'wanted,' one would violently take ones cave, fire, food, and woman. We had no tools save the club we used to bash in the head of the one we took those things from.
Now we do none of that, at least the sane. Our interactions are much more diplomatic, and we have very complex tools to perform complex tasks. It would seem, that life is the universes crowning achievement. Born largely of hydrogen, to heavier elements and finally self animated life that was eventually capable of thinking about and understanding where it 'proceeded' from; the simplest of atoms to the most complex.
It would surely seem to me that the universe has 'progressed,' unless of course you see your life as retrogression. If you do then we have made a tool for that, it's called a gun. Place a high caliber barrel into your mouth, with safety off, fully loaded and pull the trigger.
But I seriously doubt that you truly believe, with all your trillions of cells, that you are not the natural 'progression' of the universe. The proof is contained in what has universally happened up until now, as who would say that the universe has retrogressed, has passed from a more complex to a simpler structure?
Quite simply, do you believe that if humankind can stay their self defeating ways, that one day they'll live in a world much like your favorite futuristic sci-fi book or movie?
For the universe, to progress is to proceed in time, to change, only each individual man, in their fear, wants it otherwise, they want their particular slice of time, to last forever. Isn't it enough that humankind lasts forever in their progression? Because with their progress, is the only way I can see it happening, as it's the only way it's happened, (too long, too stagnant, does not a future make).
