Why would it need to be another species? It could be some unshowered-in-months nerd banging away on a laptop in a basement somewhere, sadistically making horrible things happen to certain characters (just like 'God' does). At the very end u need to devote a chapter to articulating and describing this alien world... like lovecraftian overlord aliens living in these enourmous mechanical worlds and all life is centered around creating game worlds and playing the game.
