I did not offer any opinion on that matter. I referred earlier to cultural wars. There are a whole array of issues such as abortion that are issues of the Culture Wars.

What you think of as barbarism is not irrelevant but it is beside the point.

Today it was cooler, and for the first time in a month I went riding.

What a morning! I’d turned in early and slept soundly all night. I never sleep without dreaming, but last night’s dreams were blue and light. I rode out toward Chagualá, near to the old Panteón, past the copper pavilions. Dew and spider’s webs on all the bushes and shrubs, and a great sighing among the pine trees. Deva was in highest spirits, the earth danced beneath us, young and fresh as creation’s first Sunday morning. I came to a tienda; having stopped there often on my rides last March, I saw it again, dismounted, and downed a cold beer in a four gulps. Taking hold of the brown-eyed counter girl by her waist, I swung her around; kissed her hair; and rode off.

The slide to autocracy continues, with Trump policy adviser Stephen Miller now converting the silly rhetorical flourish of calling immigration an "invasion" into an actual excuse to suspend constitutional protections.

It really was invasion-like. So it could stick. Though it will produce a Constitutional crisis and tremendous social upheaval.

That may be true.

However, how many times do I have to point out that because America is responsible for the destruction of other people's homelands due to its imperialistic endeavors, that in order to "partially" ameliorate the bad karma it's been sowing across the globe,

...then it (America) should at least be willing to take-in those that America itself may be responsible for displacing.

It does not follow, Seeds. But I do grasp your logic.

I will grant that a certain percentage of those 10 million came for reasons of real hardship and oppression, and perhaps that US policies had some part. But some large percentage simply saw an opportunity. Put together the money, flew to Mexico, and crossed.

The best policy would be to encourage “self-repatriation”.

If "US [evil/imperialistic] policies" around the globe have resulted (either directly or indirectly) in the deaths and displacement of untold millions of innocent men, women, and children,...

...then it doesn't matter one whit if the ones flooding across America's borders were directly impacted by US policies.

No, the laws of nature are showing Americans that if you want to play dirty and sow bad karma around the world by destroying other people's homelands and societies with the underlying intent of getting your grubby meat hooks on the resources of other nations,...

Why don't you start by encouraging the almost 2 million Gazans to "self-repatriate" the rubble that Israel has destroyed with American-made bombs and tactical support.

How about the "best policy" being the adoption - and putting into practice - the notion that we humans are all in this together* and that we should be lifting each other up as a whole, instead of drawing the wagons into tighter and tighter defensive circles.

That is my foundational view.

There are far too many immigrants in the US now. I agree with Ann Coulter that all immigration should be halted until those legally immigrated are integrated.

The recent Trump policies will (likely) hardly put a dent in the 10 million figure. I think a good deal of the present commotion is substance-less. If 500,000 illegals are deported (or self-deport) I will be surprised.

Once in, it is far too hard and politically difficult to deport en masse.

I do not accept the logic of this argument. The bad policies of late (Iraq, Afghanistan notably) were engineered by elites. The average American does not carry that burden.

You seem to go quite a bit too far in your judgment.

Often, men are said to “project” their impressions of “darkness” from inside themselves. I do not perceive myself as involved with dark sentiments or desires.

There is nothing “dark” in my sense of social policy vis-à-vis the immigration crisis of late. I have nothing personal against those who took advantage of the open borders. I have talked with numbers of them and understand their choices. (Note that I established my own residency here through legal means).

You tend to really go off on these moralizing rehearsals!
