You should give them a try if you have enough free time and you like books or films. I don't know how old are you, I've grown with videogames, but there are lot of them not difficult to play, whith wonderful stories. You get more intro the story when you are playing it, there are lot of videogames with moral decissions etc, and of course, most of them have a story longer than a film (you can be talking about more than 80 hours). And good music too:

This song was made for that film? I didn't know it, I've always thought it was older. I'm going to see the movie ^^

Love Debussy. Especially this piece, among all:

Funny thing is: the first time I listened to it, was a screwed up horrible version by Tomita, but there was "something about it".

That's one of my favorite Debussy pieces, too, but the Tomita version is probably my favorite version of it.

Of course, part of the reason for that might be that I grew up in Miami, and I was a regular "Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler" (aka "Star Gazers") viewer. Jack Horkheimer was an astronomer at the Miami Space Museum/Space Transit Planetarium, and he did these little 5-minute daily (?--well or at least 2-3 times per week I believe) astronomy updates that aired right before the TV sign-off late at night (if you're old enough, you'll remember that TV stations weren't always 24 hours. They used to sign off around midnight and sign back on at 5 or 6 a.m.). Anyway, Jack Horkheimer used Tomita's version of Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 as his theme music, so that version of the piece has really strong nostalgic associations for me.

That's one thing about music: a function derived from the pleasure of associating a particular piece with moods or events in our lives. It doesn't have to be "great music", as long as it triggers the nice feeling. I think it's not the only and necessarily the most important function of music, but a legitimate one.

I remember when there used to be SCN Radio, part of the media network of the US Southern Command, which headquarters were here. I used to go to bed listening to its sets of mostly rock 'n' roll oldies music, and then at midnight they would sign off for the day with this song, pretty silly and mainstream I guess, but the lyrics and and the perception of being an older song (at that time I thought it was much older), after a while left an nostalgic impression:

About the Tomita version of Arabesque, I caught part of the melody (more faithful to Debussy's) as the background of a local radio show. I called to the station to know what it was. But when I listened the full version I disliked very much the electronic effects and other "new age" arrangements he had added. It was a beautiful discovery to find the unpolluted version from Debussy.
