A) It's immoral for me to kill anybody from
my tribe, but it is moral for me to kill anybody from
the next tribe. Is that what you mean?
A -- precisely........how it was for 99% of our existence as humans. Remember, YOU, not I are arguing for an eternal, immutable morality. I have indicated what the current thinking is about how that might have evolved.
If our "current thinking" merely "evolved," then it can "evolve" again, and stop being "current." In which case, literally ANYTHING could become "moral"; in which case, even at this current moment, there actually is nothing at all that is "moral," since the word "moral" fails to refer to any particular thing at all.
Murder is only "current thinking." Slavery is only "current thinking." Rape is only "current thinking." Pedophelia is only "current thinking." We could "evolve" a society in which any or all of these are celebrated, and it would not be morally distinguishable from any other society.
And if you think it cannot happen, just look at Islamism, and you know it can.
So what you're channelling there is simply Moral Nihilism, by implication. You're not saying anything about "morality" at all. You can't believe it has any definition.

B) It doesn't seem obvious to me...or to anybody, really...that allegiance to a smaller group is more moral than allegiance to a larger group. In fact, the obvious error, the one most people would be inclined to make, would be to presume the opposite. Of course, both are illogical.
B --- WHAT LARGER GROUP?
Any group larger than your local tribe.
How is slaughtering a tribe any different from slaughtering a nation, except in raw numbers? It's the same action, just on a larger scale. If the action itself is righteous, then it's righteous for any number. If the action is evil, it's evil for any number. Numbers don't change the moral equation.
MikeNovack wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2026 3:05 pm1) I am NOT suggesting that our evolved morality will work for us in our modern, large scale societies.
"Work for us"? If it "evolved," then there's no such thing anyway. Instead, we're going with some form of crass pragmatism...whatever "works" to achieve for us whatever we desire -- be it personal happiness, corporate dominance or ethnic cleansing -- becomes what we do, and we don't even have to think about morality.
I think what you're achieving with your view, Mike, is simply the abolishing of any meaning to the concept "moral." After all, what does is mean to say, "Mike is a moral person," if "moral" means no more than "whatever Mike's society happens to approve of in the current moment"? Then it wouldn't make a stitch of difference whether Mike was a saint or a Neo-Nazi, so long as he happened to live in a society which approved his choice. Societies "evolve" many different kinds of approvals...again, think of what some societies approve...forcible female genital mutilation, child "marriage," the slitting of the throats of 'infidels,' and the blowing up of Christmas markets, among other things.
