The U.S. currently defends South Korea against aggression from North Korea.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... d/usfk.htm Should the US close its installations and withdraw the 37,500 troops from S Korea? Should the US cease defending other countries and bring its troops home?

Although you're asking whether the world needs the US I suspect you're primarily directing that question towards those in the US or The West as your supplementary question of whether the US should stop protecting South Korea might get a different answer depending on which side of the 38th parallel you asked it.
Should the question really be along the lines of "does the US make the world a better place to live?" as empires have historically crumbled and fallen and the world continues to turn and people move on so I doubt "the world" really "needs" any country and certainly not in the long term.

I honestly think that most who said "yes" are from the US.
"Need" is a strong word, I think that the world will adapt to the removal (whether by a catastrophic event/ not) any country, including the US.

I'm from the US and I said yes. But I also say yes for all the others as well. Maybe need was the wrong word to use. Maybe the OP should have asked: Is every country just as valuable as the next? But again I would answer yes.
