I do not think the author is going to take a hint and define his terms in a manner consistent with grammar.

We'll never get to ask the aliens. Even more so, never ever, if they were formless, not an attribute of anything in nature. Not because they aren't embodiedly there, not even downloaded to silicon of course. But because interstellar communication, let alone travel, is impossible. And if aliens weren't made of corpuscles of light, what are they formlessly made of?
