So there is always a potential for things to get better.
I, too, am quite optimistic, but not for the same reason. Simply allow actual freedom to spread throughout the world and this will facilitate plenty of forward movement. No matter how intelligent [or noble] the "decent" people are, the best outcomes are derived from individuals deciding for themselves [families] where their best interests lie.
The System needs some serious deconstruction with a generous helping of transparency and as much localization as is possible. All of the globalists need to be sent packing for another century where they will no doubt try to pull off the same non-sense once again.

No, you have just written the menu for an ideocracy. If you just hand out freedom willy-nilly with not controls or plan all you will get is chaos, and the tragedy of the commons, massive exploitation with no feed back loop saying no since consequences are more likely to not befall the greedy.
What has press freedom made? Mind control algorithms, targeted advertising, dopamine controlled buying frenzy, waste, waste and more waste.

Freedom also means the freedom to have your own facts. To promote any idea however false.

Where do you find a free press? Except for some of the internet, the press has been captured by the corporations/government like everything else.

Exactly, like it has always been. Allow the free market of ideas to choose which is best. But you cannot exclude any idea. All must compete. It is only when the system becomes rigged [corrupted] do you have really poor outcomes.
You have to have
some faith in your fellow man. Wouldn't you rather trust your neighbor more than some paid-off bureaucrat?
