Hiiiiii hippypagan98,

Your story about the children on the playground is realy really touching to me! it speaks of how beautiful and loving the human soul really is when it comes to treating each other with love, compassion and respect. but I do not understand what you mean by we all must be careful in this day and age about treating each other equally and compassion? how can compassion and tenderness ever be seen other than a good thing?

Hello there someoneiswatching :D
Aww thank you. I thought it was lovely too how this teacher gave this kid a hug to calm him down. She really seems to understand what it takes to work with children; unfortunately not all teachers do sadly :(

I agree, the human soul is a beautiful thing. Human beings are pretty much programmed from birth to sympathise and to be kind, loving and caring, which is such a nice thought.

but I do not understand what you mean by we all must be careful in this day and age about treating each other equally and compassion? how can compassion and tenderness ever be seen other than a good thing?

Sorry, I should have explained myself there
Erm, what I mean is...I am studying at college for my degree so that I can become a teacher, and my voluntary placement is part of this. In college we discuss all sorts, including how we all have to follow rules and regulations when dealing with children.
There have been some stories in the papers recently about how people in childcare settings have abused their position; like this one:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/ne ... hotos.html
Fortunately such stories are quite rare and the large majority of people who work with children are nothing like this. However, such stories do give way to panic and so policies and procedures are brought in to protect both the children and teachers against harm or allegation. It's such a shame.
In the place I work at, kids regularly come up and grab your hand to show you something they have drawn or found etc, but some places frown upon hand holding because of such stories as the one above. It's a shame that such things have come to be, as the majority of people simply understand that sometimes a child needs a hug, a shoulder to cry on, to hold someone's hand without it being sordid.
Unfortunately it seems that whilst the majority of parents are grateful their child has someone who will care for them properly whilst they are at school, the government, who has no idea what it is to work with children, seems to want to scare everyone into thinking all adults are potential threats whilst missing those that actually are.
I see teachers as not just teachers, but as caregivers too. Equality, compassion and tenderness is wonderful, unfortunately not everyone sees this.

On a more positive note though, if a child does come to me upset, I will not hesitate to comfort them, because small children need a bit of extra understanding, especially when they first start school. If their parents aren’t there to give them a hug, you can't just leave them to sob their hearts out; surely that is wrong itself?
