The best way to control religion and emasculate it, is to make it part of the state.
In the UK religion plays little or no part in politics. And mean mention of "god" sets people running for cover being as close to political suicide to bring religion into the house. Atheism is the norm among MPs. In the US where the state and religion are divorced it is political suicide to declare yourself an atheist.
