Re: Holy crap!
The shooter's father said he attended a local mosque.
However the father also said he did not believe his son was motivated by Islam to commit the shooting.
He said it had something more to do with gay's.
I am still betting that the shooter found out he caught AIDS and went to shoot up the place he held responsible for it.
The news also reported one neighbor who said the shooter was hanging out with 4 local gay neighbors.
So this is very likely a gay thing -- gay on gay crime -- rather than an Islamic thing.

The shooter is not being characterized as a religious fanatic.Walker wrote: If he was a religious fanatic motivated by his religion then lumping other religions in with his is intellectually dishonest.
He was born in NYC to Islamic parents. He did attend a mosque. But unknown whether he truly was fanatical about it.
Re: Holy crap!
I was trying to make a point about what a person would do in the name of an imaginary god -- and there seem to be a lot of them. It's fascinating, don't you think? I wasn't saying all theists would do this. If we consider the way some people make sweeping generalizations of how all atheists are, do you think that is intellectually dishonest?Walker wrote:If he was a religious fanatic motivated by his religion then lumping other religions in with his is intellectually dishonest.Lacewing wrote:Ah yes... Re: Holy crap!
The FBI said they now expect copycat crimes of the same nature as this one.
Not sure how this will affect the gay/lesbo community.
If you are gay/lesbo it may be wise to have a cooling off period and avoid gay/lesbo nightclubs for a while.
Even if you are straight it would make sense to avoid nightclubs for a while too.
Nightclubs are probably not a safe venue right about now as these expected copycats are revving up from this tv news.

Re: Holy crap!
Surely the shooter was a self-hating gay. If all those tempting gays go away then young Omar need not worry about the stigma ever again.
Of course "this shit" will continue. Every time there's a mass murder there are cries of "this has to stop!". Regulations are proposed, the NRA and its allied media get to work, shooters get angry, the issue goes away. Every time, for decades.
Obama has tried to regulate guns for years and opposition to any kind of restrictions for shooters has only become more entrenched. For sanity's sake I think Americans will have to start treat shootings like natural disasters such as storms and volcanoes. The laws won't change. The US has become weirdly self-destructive and it seems that, rather than compete with China, the US is doing its best to become a poor white trash nation, always at war with itself, rotting itself from the inside. Hopefully its smart people can prevent that. The lack of gun regulation is pure hubris, a nation clinging to a traditional freedom that it can no longer afford, neither financially nor socially.
Hello America? You can't afford to allow renegades easy access to weapons any more. Modern weapons are too fast, accurate and powerful and there's too many malcontents. Besides, you are no longer unchallenged as dominant nation. You need to lift your game, not fall into a self-destructive mire. I'm speaking theoretically. Not too many expect the US to rise again any time soon.
The US had it all and it threw it away. I suppose that brings the nation in line with every other dominant empire; they all end up falling into hubris and destroying themselves from within.

He's not unique. How many other people, all over the world, were doing the very same thing? Even at the very same moment? How many shootings, per week, just in the US? How many will imitate this one? Domestic, emotional, social, political, ideological differences ? Shoot 'em! Did he steal the cigar? Did he look menacing in a hoodie? Shoot 'em! Do you hear voices in your head? They probably say "Shoot 'em!". How many political debates hinge on whether to send in more troops, more guns, more bombs, more drones, more firepower? How many difficult diplomatic situations are solved by an assassination? Yes, i do know that.thedoc wrote:You don't know that, you are only assuming that because he used a gun in the act.Skip wrote:Is this an opportune moment to mention that it's also some WHO BELIEVES IN GUNS?

McVeigh killed a whole lot more people with his truck bomb -- a couple of hundred -- than any of these mass shooters ever did.
And UBL killed even more with his hijacked jetliner bombs -- a couple of thousand.

Trump is a lot more dangerous than one gay shooter shooting up a gay nightclub. Trump with his thin skin and his finger on the nuclear button is not rational. Voting for Trump is not rational either.
Re: Holy crap!
The FBI already knew about this shooter !! Wow !!
How are they going to live this down?
Same issue as 9-11 and the FBI knowing it was coming and not doing anything about it.
Maybe the FBI is getting too big and hamstrung to be an effective police agency?

Re: Holy crap!
So, if you restricted crazy people's access to firearms, everybody who has a problem with somebody else would turn to explosives, and thus kill more people? So, really, the easy availability of guns is saving lives?yiostheoy wrote:

Okay!
So, now, all we have to address is the global culture of violence as a solution to all problems.

Okay!
So, now, all we have to address is the global culture of violence as a solution to all problems.
And 10% to 15% of the population is always going to be mentally ill.
So there is simply no solution.
This shooter may have saved someone from getting AIDS in the near future so there is a slight silver lining to this cloud. But only slight. He has also given guns a bad name and Hillary may use this to try to get more gun legislation at the Federal level.
Re: Holy crap!
Greta... excellent post... well said! I agree whole-heartedly. It feels like the U.S. is coming undone at the seams from within. Among the people I encounter, there seems to be a broad, common understanding of the path we are inevitably on. Complete strangers talk about it. There also seems to be a heightened shift in awareness and conversations... as if many people are already evolving in preparation for the world ahead, while others are ratcheting themselves up for self-destruction. I think America needs a toxic cleansing -- and it will likely never be the same afterward, nor would people want it to be. Personally, I would prefer one world of provinces/territories. The clash and manipulation of countries seems sick to me.
Re: Holy crap!
Of course it is! Never economic or political oppression, imperialism, nation-destroying, homelessness, hunger and stress.yiostheoy wrote: Mental illness is the true main problem.
Really? Was it always as high a percent as that? Is it caused by anything in particular or genetic or just in the water, or what? And you're sure there will never be a cure? Therefore, some mentally ill people will always be in positions of authority and power. Bien. And it's still not a good idea to make firearms a little harder to get?And 10% to 15% of the population is always going to be mentally ill.
Lie down in neat rows to save the undertaker extra work.So there is simply no solution.
