I won at poker just a while ago, btw.Dalek Prime wrote:*Buurrrrpppp!* Yeah, no problem, lady!.... I gotta pee....thedoc wrote:Thankyou, JS. and IC. I hope you realize I was venting my frustrations at some of the content of this forum.
DP, thanks for adding something? to this thread. And MB. I liked the sarcasm, intentional or not.
I thought you could play poker any time of year?
PS. I thought marjoram posted that, for some reason, hence the lady bit. But that's me, in the corner, cranky and farting, so I've got an excuse.

Welcome to Metaphysics.Lacewing wrote:Yes, one would think that people who come to this website are willing to engage in mature and intelligent discussion. Perhaps even be open to new ideas or broader perspectives beyond their own! Instead, we find an all-out slugfest going on, surrounding a soapbox that deluded, manic people keep stepping up on only to get yanked off of and beaten to a pulp. It's kind of like a cosmic comedy. ...
Welcome to Politics and Philosophy.I wonder if this might be representing (and revealing) a broader condition in our world. So much noise that we can barely maintain clarity -- and so much desperation and exhaustion that it's difficult to have civil conversations nor feel connected with anyone different than ourselves. Everyone has their own opinion, many have agendas, and most people are unwilling to consider or honor anything beyond their own.
Although this website doesn't provide what I'd expected, somehow I've managed to get in the spirit and give myself a good laugh from it... while gaining insights in ways that I wouldn't have guessed. I've considered that it might be giving me a crash-course for dealing with the larger world coming undone. I can see that I don't hesitate near as much in dealing with nonsense in my daily life anymore.

There are a few of us who are willing, but when none is available, will fall back on making jokes, or at least trying. (I know, - I'm very trying.)Harbal wrote:Not necessarily.Lacewing wrote:one would think that people who come to this website are willing to engage in mature and intelligent discussion.

Yes well, there are pubs and then there are Pubs.Arising_uk wrote:marjoram_blues wrote:Strange thing, I was actually thinking that Rick's 'pub' was becoming lighter and brighter - a bit like a French salon.

At least we have moved on from spit'n'sawdust types ( with snug for daring women, naughty priests and lovers).
Rick's Philosophy Now Inn with its 24hr opening has all the necessary conveniences: juke box, games ( beware low-flying darts), snacky lite-bites and beverages for all tastes. With outside beer garden - who could ask for more?
Oh yeah, forgot the fascinating clientele
And play area for the kids...
Anyfink else, guv ?
now where's that magazine? Damned flies need swattin'.

You ignore every constructive argument presented, and label everyone who disagrees with you a "blind denier".Nick_A wrote:Techniques to establish self justification include ad homs and hostility.
How do you think you are part of the solution?

Yes, but it is also an expression of ignorance: like many on the Internet Forums, for some reason he conflates straight insults with the "ad hominem fallacy" which he does not understand. I think people do this because they think it makes them look more clever to use Latin regardless of what it means, hoping others are fooled.Harbal wrote:Have you ever considered that the "ad homs and hostility" may be an expression of frustration at coming to a forum, looking for wisdom, and finding none?Nick_A wrote:
At one time philosophy was defined and understood as the love of wisdom. In modern times it has become the pursuit of self justification. Idiots who think themselves clever often find their lives frustrating, I have observed.
But, Harbal, on the other hand, since you have taken the role of court jester (I think you would agree) and respond with derision upon most of what you read here, I hardly think you are in a position to criticise others for their lack of apparent wisdom.

It was more an attempt at justification, rather than criticism.Hobbes' Choice wrote:

This begs the question; do you think there is no wisdom here or is it that you think that Nick A is not capable of recognising it?

No I wasn't. If you've got a point to make, Hobbes, just make it.Hobbes' Choice wrote: Okay - you were just trying to be understanding.
