Thank you. You too. I'll post a couple of links here to get you started. It's an odd looking language, unlike most. If it's too much, try python. Much friendlier. But both have interactive interpreters, so you can experiment without any trouble.

This is an excellent idea. When your involved in programming you forget whether it's day or night or if your broke or a millionaire. Best of all with the attention required you even forget about being depressed.

Doob, I'm really glad I fell into the field. It's been a lifesaver. Do you have a favourite language? I'm a bit of a language geek, myself....

Unfortunately I'm no-longer in it...and I do mean unfortunately! Unexpected things just happen in life.

What should have gone in a straight line didn't happen. Long story. I do remember how absorbing it all was hitting the sack at 4:00 am because I didn't know what time it was and being at work at 8:00. I was programming in assembly language at the time so, I'm sure you know, it was early days. Every hour seemed like 10 minutes. Anyways, you made the right choice! I think very few people would regret having chosen that field.

It's not for everyone but you won't know until you try. Who knows, you may live 20 years longer because you haven't got time to croak!

If I didn't have a boss (me ) who understood the need for flex hours and sleep, I'd be out of the business as well... You still dabble though, no? I'm still a code junkie. It's in my blood.

I still do but only as required mostly in scripting language like automating a more complex spreadsheet. Not always as simple as it sounds. It can still suck me in but not as much as it used to. As you get older you tend to go from digital back to analog.

I agree. I'm very old fashioned, other than programming. Heck, I'm almost a Luddite.

My own observations...

This appeared to be yet another manic thread, which then quickly transitioned from helpless desperation into manic ranting (in another thread) about the depths of vileness in all people... as if this person is in any position to judge, much less proclaim ANYTHING as ultimate sweeping truth. These appear to be (yet more) displays of someone continually bouncing off walls and irresponsibly using a public forum to try to take people along on a dark trip of self-absorbed denial and rage. I do not lack compassion. I'm just voicing, what seems to me, to be a bizarre pattern of behavior in a public place -- just as I would comment if someone in the middle of a shopping mall removed all of their clothes and screamed accusations at people while doing cartwheels into the plantings and ponds. We're confronted with it -- what does it mean -- are we not supposed to guess?

Meanwhile, there is a forum member who repeatedly bombards the public forum with claims of his divine inspiration in all things, yet he has made no effort to offer insight, guidance, or salvation to this agitated cartwheeling soul. Both are screaming for attention and claiming to know "how it is or should be" for everyone else, despite the extraordinary lack of clarity and balance continually displayed from both camps. One might think they would approve of each other... but I guess they are competing for the same declining viewership.

I feel inspired to remember that -- beyond the small pockets of absurd intoxication and imaginary importance -- life is continually evolving for those who notice. There's a point at which humor and contemplation must move on, else there's nothing new to see or work with. It takes courage and extraordinary creativity and vision to move on from the stagnant mentally familiar -- like standing up from a well-worn campsite, putting on ones backpack, and trekking off to new unknown mountain ranges... even if at some point along the way, we must use a walking stick to do it. Imagine our own, and humanity's, expanded scope of awareness if we valued such a thing as a primary reason for the journey.
