It might be tolerable, I had a dog that rolled in a fresh one, and then tried to jump up on the bed of the truck with my wife. She just about gagged, I took the dog and dunked it in a stream to wash it off (not very gently, on purpose) and then took the dog home and went back to my wife and the other dog to watch a lunar eclipse. It was during the summer and warm weather.
Hehe! Reminds me as a kid, my dog rolling in cow muck, then chasing me. My brothers were on a boulder in the field, laughing, so I ran between them, the dog still in pursuit. They laughed no more.
That too was a rather hot, sunny summer's day, as I recall.

I was about to post that PhilX seemed to be a bit ahead in the rant, but then I noticed that he repeated the same phrase 3 times, So I'll need to deduct a few points for lack of imagination.

I've heard it said that there is nothing like a good rant.
And that was nothing like a good rant.

Does it make anyone feel better if he calls someone else a name ?
And if not why do people repeat this negative experience ?
Aggression is good for not much if anything at all.
Intelligent people realized long ago that cooperation works better.
There is no element of experiment or artistry in aggression.

We could try out something new and see what happens.
A free hug for a monster hiding under a rock ?

Is it possible to manipulate an aggressive idividual into civilized behaviour ?
What would psychiatrists try ? Does anyone know ?
One try:
"Oh, what fire you have in yourself, it“s unbelievable ..."
is what a casanova type used successfully to calm his girlfriend when she was foaming at the mouth (and for excellent reasons).
Do aggressive individuals ever grow tired of performing according to the same pattern all the time ?
Yelling abuse is not open to many variations, as far as I have observed.
What if the targets started yawning and saying "we heard this so many times, we are not shocked and indignant any more" ?
What if the targets started provoking the aggressive individual to see how long can he bark without noticing that he is being manipulated for the targets“ entertainment or even bets ?
So much for aggression from me, but I am not an expert. I could be very wrong indeed.

I once tried to appeace a colleague (long ago) and it worked for just one day.
When I showed up the next time everything was back to normal (the colleague was barking abuse and vomiting poison again, notoriously). So I quit the job.
Can anyone recommend any strategies that might work ?
Expert and layman advice are both welcome.

In a family you can have aggressive and passive offspring. This is true for animals as well. You can only teach either to suppress behavior.

Thank you Kris.
Two questions:
1. is passive aggression aggressive or passive behavior ?
2. how do you suppress the behavior of a passive child ? by instigating them into action of some kind ?

'Passive aggressive' is psychobabble. It doesn't mean anything.

There is only one way to get small children to behave the way you want them to behave and you have to start doing this from a very young age. When they behave appropriately reward them by giving them your full attention because that's all they want. When they behave inappropriately just IGNORE them. Don't yell, don't punish, don't threaten, don't even acknowledge that they exist. Just turn your head away and completely ignore them. They will howl with absolute rage because this drives them fucking nuts. Just calmly move out of earshot until the howling is less bothersome but under no circumstances acknowledge that you can hear it.
Kids are very quick learners and they hate this more than anything else in the world. If you and your partner are both very disciplined about this from very early on your kids will be model children and everybody will say so. Take my word for it. It worked for my kids and it worked for my grand-kids.
