This forum is a huge step towards democracy, I would say.
No, it's just a teeny weeny baby step. And it is just another function of democracy and its layering.

But what is the opposite of democracy and do we have it in countries like the US ?

Yes, clans.

I have not watched "Dallas", but I have seen some episodes of "Denver".
A powerful family decides the familiy policy and within it there is a structure of hierarchy.

Shall we combat Dallas and Denver ?

Robin Hood also had a clan of sorts.

The above seems apropos of nothing but it got me thinking, wondering if the human body is a democratic institution. It is not. But an enlightened human does approach the outside world in a democratic manner, not out of choice but out of necessity, if it wants to advance its cause.
