Look, you are veering off the point. In the case of both Israel and South Africa — two “problem states” — what created both, what allowed both to come to exist, was precisely “identity”. It is something claimed, something nourished, built and maintained. It is by its nature and in the scheme of things aggressive, insistent, and of course violent. The basis of life is in violence. When that identity crumbles or becomes sickly, those states, those people, cannot hold together.
