The world is full of tragedy, hypocrisy and injustice.
The hungry ones were terrified they wouldn't get to make movies, fortune and fame. Harvey is a toad so he likely sees the relationship as a quid pro quo, a business transaction for mutual satisfaction, never mind all the Hollywood lovey-dovey of the movies.

The latest movie version of
The Call of the Wild by the great Jack London ...
... uses an animation of Buck the Dog and gives him all kinds of human characteristics that dogs share with humans, and attributes some human characteristics that are likely beyond a dog's capacity. Great movie for a kid, it's not so heavy on the savagry of wild animals but does give it appropriate attention for a general audience.
