SONIA: What can we do? We must live our lives. [A pause] Yes, we shall live, Uncle Vanya. We shall live through the long procession of days before us, and through the long evenings; we shall patiently bear the trials that fate imposes on us; we shall work for others without rest, both now and when we are old; and when our last hour comes we shall meet it humbly, and there, beyond the grave, we shall say that we have suffered and wept, that our life was bitter, and God will have pity on us.
Ah, then dear, dear Uncle, we shall see that bright and beautiful life; we shall rejoice and look back upon our sorrow here; a tender smile — and — we shall rest. I have faith, Uncle, fervent, passionate faith. [Sonia kneels down before her uncle and lays her head on his hands. She speaks in a weary voice].
We shall rest. [Telegin plays softly on the guitar].
We shall rest. We shall hear the angels. We shall see heaven shining like a jewel. We shall see all evil and all our pain sink away in the great compassion that shall enfold the world. Our life will be as peaceful and tender and sweet as a caress. I have faith; I have faith. [She wipes away her tears] My poor, poor Uncle Vanya, you are crying! [Vanya weeps] You have never known what happiness was, but wait, Uncle Vanya, wait! We shall rest. [She embraces him]
We shall rest. [The Watchman's rattle is heard in the garden; Telegin plays softly; Madame Voitskaya writes something on the margin of her pamphlet; Marina knits her stocking].
We shall rest.
Is this what I'm missing out on?

It was Ibsen I mostly concentrated on.
What are your favorite or in any case recommended plays? I have a good volume of Ibsen but have not read any.

I, too, have an excellent volume of Ibsen, which I also have not read.

In this, that is in
our theatrical production, we each of us have a rôle, right? Your rôle is to be the self-described and self-professed postmodern man extruded onto the stage of the present. You comprehend nothing. You read nothing. Nothing interests you. You are 'vacuous man' -- an empty vessel. You do not understand how *you* even arrived at the place you inhabit (non-intellectually, non-comprehendingly) and it seems to offend you that someone, in this case me, has seen you, and assigned
description to you.
Do you agree? Do you not agree? These questions are irrelevant to you. Why? Because postmodern man needs to know nothing. What's to know? It is all mere opinion. You take this as an invitation to
quip only -- but there is no more. Or so very little more.
So
if the question then becomes
What are you missing out on? the answer (and there is one) cannot be heard by you. Nothing has meaning. There really is no meaning. Thus nothing is important. Since you cannot receive an answer (it would make no sense to you) the answer given can only be directed to other people.
So if you mean what relevancy
does Chekhov have within the 'trajectory' (I often write about) that has led to your extrusion as a completely blank man
-- yes! Many of his works can be referenced.
Did Sonia
actually believe what she said? Or was it a desperate act of a desperate person who had substantially lost faith in living life? If you knew the trajectory of the play (and numerous other plays and literary works) you'd be able to dully understand something. But you understand nothing. By your own choice. Or is it?
What
are you missing out on? I promise I will have a good deal more to say on the topic!

Alexis Jacobi is a Wanker, but I don't know his birth date.

This is getting more amazing by the moment.
I too am black.
Two black Pisces. What if DontAskMe turned out to be black too!

No Harbal. You
wish you were as black as me but you are really just tannish.
Even in this you can’t make the grade.

But here I must point out (again) that everyone who writes on this thread, and likely everyone participating in this forum, make it very plain that they do not subscribe to any ideas that are remotely absolutist. In fact -- and here I move into an interpretive mode -- they fight (literally) tooth & claw against any assertions about anything that are expressed as 'absolute truths'.
This here -- to be generous -- is an
inaccuracy.

It just shows how wrong one can be. I always imagined you as beige.

No it isn't, henry. Everything he writes is about the world in his head, where he is someone of significance, and everyone else isn't, not the real world.

Yeah, it is, particularly, if as you say,
everything he writes is about the world in his head.
it does not seem to me, though, he's (completely) wrong...there is sumthin' wrong in the world...we, he and I, don't agree on what that is, but his assessment is not just in his head
Anyway: his
inaccuracy --
everyone who writes on this thread...make it very plain that they do not subscribe to any ideas that are remotely absolutist...they fight (literally) tooth & claw against any assertions about anything that are expressed as 'absolute truths' -- irks me. I'm rather proud to be a
fulminating objectivist (especially considering the source of that
insult) and I won't have some guy livin' in a craphole tell me I'm not.
