What I had for lunch

Since I know everyone loves these posts of mine, and have said so, many times, I thought I'd share today's experience, from which I've just returned. A friend recently told me that there a place called Popeye's Chicken, which I hadn't heard of before, not far from me, and having checked it out on Google Maps, it turned out that it would be really convenient for Lidl, too, on the way back, and so, since I'm always willing to try new experiences, I decided to go. I don't know if it's new, but it smelt fairly new, at least, and since I hadn't heard of it before, I suspect it is. According to what I found out online, its full name is Popeye's Louisiana Chicken, part of a chain, and they were certainly playing up the Louisiana angle with the music playing, old Blues tracks, mostly, though I couldn't name any particular one, not being a fan. The burger, when it came, was fairly small, and dripping with melted cheese, so much so, in fact, that I very quickly got my hands all greasy and had to keep wiping them. The chips, or fries I suppose, more accurately, had a sort of spicy coating, fairly bland, but the 500ml of Dr Pepper Zero Vanilla was fine, and something I've never had before. I had a single dip, garlic mayo, and the whole lot came to more than eleven quid, which, frankly, simply wasn't worth it, for what you got. On the plus side, the people working there were really friendly and helpful, and the whole place sounded empty, other than me, as I was probably a bit early for the main lunchtime trade, especially as it's Sunday. All in all, though, I can't in honesty recommend it, and probably won't be going again.

The chicken sandwich was a big splash when it came out and created imitators hoping to cash in on the craze (maybe 5 years ago). It's decent, but their signature dish is fried chicken, which is the best of the fast food places. In addition their sides like red beans and rice are among the best fast food fare, though their fries won't rival a burger place. Not up to Real Cajun, but in places outside the South, it might be the best Cajun you're going to get.

Not up to Real Cajun, but in places outside the South, it might be the best Cajun you're going to get.

It might be worth a second chance, then, as I don't believe I've ever tried Cajun food. Not that I remember, anyway. I couldn't find a menu online, or at least, not for this particular branch, so asked the girl behind the counter to read it out, and basically just stopped her at the second item. I knew it was some sort of competitor to KFC, but I'm not a huge fan of that, as I don't like their chips.

Was the tomato killed in Cleveland before it could get to New York?

Try the two piece dark meat spicy chicken with red beans and rice as the side and I think you get a drink. You're not allergic to frying oil, right?

I could easily eat salmon every day, or at least, something fish based. One of my favourites at the moment is the fish and prawn curry at Wetherspoon's, which comes with rice, a small naan and two poppadoms. I only usually have that on Thursdays, though, as that's their curry club day, when it's on special offer.

I don't think you can get beans and rice in the UK. In fact, you can't get a lot of the sides that are available in the USA.

I hate red beans, I sub with regular pork and beans, spice up with tomato sauce.
Every one of my wives could not cook, never learnt, I on the other hand I made sure I knew how to do these basic things by watching my parents do them and being ready to lend a hand, I can cook quite well free hand. I get complements.
