The Golden Ratio vs the Rule of Thirds
Never studied art and I already know about the Golden Ratio's supposed connection with aesthetics.
This article compares two rules, saying one is better than the other. To me, I think this article's approach to art may be too rigid.
Tell me what you think:

Both rules just say that a bit of negative space off to one side of a composition is quite pleasing. In all other respects they are largely arbitrary. The thing which makes the spiral worse than the other one is that it is the more self-evidently hopeless of the two because you can make any picture good or bad fit it by just re-orienting the spiral.

Your so-called "rule of thirds" reminds me of Satan casting a third of the stars out of heaven, leaving two-thirds or 666 stars out of a thousand.

For one, none of the photos he uses for demonstration actually line up with the "Golden Ratio." We could maybe say very roughly that they do, but it's very rough.Philosophy Explorer wrote:Never studied art and I already know about the Golden Ratio's supposed connection with aesthetics.

I believe these sorts of things are nonsense as proposed "rules (of thumb)" that will create works that appeal to most folks, anyway, though. Different people like different things. There's no getting around that.

Wow! 'It' was truly 'evil' and pretty amazing as well as what did 'it' do with the .66666... or .7th of the star left over?bobevenson wrote:Your so-called "rule of thirds" reminds me of Satan casting a third of the stars out of heaven, leaving two-thirds or 666 stars out of a thousand.

You might try reading the book of Revelation to avoid making such stupid comments or asking such stupid questions.
