That reminds me of an old "Blondie" comic strip, where this bum in a beret is always trying to hit up Dagwood for a handout. The bum asks Dagwood to contribute to a velvet smoking jacket he wants to buy. Dagwood asks, "Why on Earth would you want a velvet smoking jacket?" The bum says, "Just because I'm poor doesn't mean I don't like nice things."

Wait a minute...I, I must be getting you mixed-up with another member here... Are you saying - ? - Do you now live in a mandatory union state?

I'm a union guy but, I've never heard of such a state.

Where is it?

I can't think of a possible scenario, in an existing democracy, where a mandatory membership in a union would exist.

Could you help me out on this before we go any further?

Get off it, Bill, you know as well as I do that union membership is mandatory, otherwise an employee could refuse to join and still get the same benefits without paying union dues. Where the hell have you been?

check·off/ˈ[chek-awf, -of]
noun
1. the collection of union dues by employers through compulsory deduction from each worker's wages.

I don't understand what you are saying...WHY would someone, again, in a country with at least a modicum of democracy, be forced to be an employee of a particular company?

I honestly never heard of that...

Not sure how it works in America but over here in the UK this is exactly how it works. All get the terms and conditions negotiated by the union, what they don't get is legal representation if they have a dispute with their employers. Of course they could work for less if they wanted.

Not sure of the history of unions in the States but over here the 'closed-shop' was pretty much the norm until it was made illegal.

To the other member; Let me make sure I have this correct because this is really sounding bazaar to me. Even though I accept that this really happened to you...the story sounds like the ones used on right-wing radio programs by shills that only think in slogans.

Just to be straight: You are telling me you wanted a job at a company that had a union agreement in-place.

Why were you drawn to that company?

You live in a state where there is NO alternative to a union job?

Employment with a company that has a legal, recognized, union agreement in-place generally means great wages, excellent benefits, and a recognition of a need for the spiritual aspect of being a human.

You are telling me - and I, for now, believe this...You were forced to take a job at a company that had a legal, recognized, union agreement in-place. Just HOW does that happen???What country & state do you live in???

You then were beat-up and your car was keyed. Was there a police report? Were there charges?

PLEASE answer the above questions.

While I am waiting for your reply I will be feverishly researching to discover what state you work in.

I AM PRAYING YOU ARE TELLING THE TRUTH.

Credibility here at the Philosophy Now Forums is a bit like virginity. Once you lose it...you don't get it back.

...I'll wait right here...
