It's interesting to note that if a woman came on here ranting about how much she hates men everyone would reel back in disgusted horror (both male and female), yet several posters on this forum regularly write the most vile, misogynistic shit about women and no one bats an eyelid. Women have far more reason to hate men than the other way round, yet they rarely do. Why would that be?

I've been wondering about this too. As you say, a handful of the newer forumites (or possibly just one under multiple names, who knows?) do clearly have a big problem with women.

I'm getting the impression that they are mostly very young - Kayla may also be young but she comes across as pretty mature by comparison. Generally I suppose we've been giving the misogynists an easy ride for that reason. But women have a tough enough time in philosophy anyway for historical and social reasons, and because of the thick clouds of testosterone that sometimes hang over philosophical disputes, so I'm not feeling good about the fact that women who surf in to the Philosophy Now forum get hit by a lot of poisonous nonsense from some of the yoof here. Should we get tough and start slinging people out?

The worst offenders don't seem to be that young. Young guys tend to like women. I wasn't suggesting you throw them out, I was making the point that no one on here seems to call them out on it, male or female. It's not just this forum of course; it's a societal thing. Someone on here said we shouldn't take it seriously; in other words they are just 'boys being boys' ho hum. I don't buy that of course, but I'm a lone voice.

Yes, I know you weren't suggesting that we throw them out, but I'm starting to think it might be quite a good idea. We've never done much censorship here, but maybe we should try it. We've started pruning a few of the more offensive threads recently and I think it improves the place. I'm in favour of free speech and I think that some of the more behaviourally challenged people here might be encouraged to go off and exercise their right to free speech somewhere else!

An alternative might be for us to create a new forum area which might be called The Nursery - for the young and "young at heart". It would be buried somewhere unobtrusive and carry a warning notice. That way, only people who wanted to read ignorant abuse by aggressive half-wits would go there, and the rest of the forum could be freed up as a space for rational discussion. Selected forum members would be allowed to post in the nursery but barred by the forum software from posting anywhere else on the forum. We could do this easily. This wouldn't exactly be censorship as those who wanted to read their pearls of wisdom and engage with them would still be easily able to do so, but they would no longer be able to shout down the adults when we're trying to talk about serious stuff. If they showed signs of growing up, they could be allowed out into the rest of the forum. Maybe I should ask what the mods think?

i am stuck in high school for one more year - cant wait till it ends - and i see plenty of it

the young republican crown is pretty openly misogynist

the apolitical players will not openly express their views around girls but among themselves they are even worse than the young republicans

older sexists are at least protective of girls and women

i cant remember when i had gun safety basics drilled into me but obviously it was done before i could form coherent memories

i cant remember the first time i fired a bb gun

and i think i was 6 or 7 the first time i fired an actual firearm
