Islam has not gone unchanged when it comes to other cultures outside the ME. Many young Muslims are rejecting the dogmatic and fundamental principles whilst maintaining a "islamic' identity, just as many so-called 'christians' still cling to the notion that there must be something out there, but don[t really believe in the Christian creeds.

Modernity has crushed the core of christianity as it is crushing the core of Islam. Modernity is also finding its way into the ME. Maybe you have not heard of the "Arab Spring". But this is stimulated by young arab kids travelling to Europe, going to University, mainly the UK,( and France from old French colonies), where they learn about personal freedom and democratic values. These ideas they have been taking home with questions about political change.
In addition the ME is swamped with western popular culture; pop music and cinema from the west.
For example Iran has become very modernised in the cities and tends to poll an average of 40% for the progressive party.
