Re: Hello new here!
I read your useful post and thank you...... but twice I have had to draw people back to the question. I think my care at posting is not the problem but the length to which people critise others off the subject. I'm aware I my make grammatical errors, and that at times I might may not form a statemen...

Re: Hello new here!
I'm surprised at the strength of his feelings, but I think Voice Of Time is making a point. What people tend to forget is that dictionary definitions are written by people. It is consensus that makes definition; words have no meaning beyond what people mean by them. Do people really forget who writ...

Re: Hello new here!
I'm sure I read somewhere... 'When foul language begins, philosophy ends. ' I think my hello achieved its end. Thank you for the useful contributions.

Re: Hello new here!
Two points.
one, you would have a harder time conceptualising 'Fate'
two, Undermining as in it renders those terms meaningless.
(Hard work, determination. ...serendipity )

Re: Hello new here!
You don't have to believe in fate to give yourself goals. In fact, believing in fate would be more consistent with never giving yourself any goals.
I agree. Another trap door with a 'belief in fate' is believing you have some kind of "Divine right'.... isn't that distructive? I...

Re: Hello new here!
I think your second paragraph is key and illustrate my point....when things go wrong, fate offers nothing but a flawed view of the now. Though I agree totally with your early view it being 'Mumbo Jumbo'

Re: Hello new here!
In my opener I said I see nothing positive about a belief in fate....I see many positive aspects in willpower or a determination to achieve. Having gained success dont we regonize our hard work. I agree fate being about a narrative; some belief in a master plan, that we are powerless to alter. I'm s...

Re: Hello new here!
I don't understand how willpower fits in with fate as any fixed point is fated by its very nature. There are social and genetic predispositions which may steer a person in to certain directions with no clear outcomes ; but surely the material world and the chaos at play undermine any possible clear ...
