Re: The death sentence / capitol punishment

I think the death sentence is wrong because anyone who is willing to commit a heinous crime is not rational. I do not think people who are sick in the head can be rehabilitated, but should be researched. A large percentage of violent crimes are sexually derived. There is a breed of sharks that thei...

Re: God cannot know everything. Carnal love, reproduction or

In a sense you're asking too many questions, but i'll see if i can address some of your ideas, and i'll start by saying i don't believe in god. On your point about god not being able to have sex, if Christ was god incarnate then he has felt the human desires you speak of. The idea of Christ as God ...

Re: God cannot know everything. Carnal love, reproduction or

[quote="Greatest I am"]God cannot know everything. Carnal love, reproduction or sex. Believers are constantly saying impossible things of God. They make many definitive statement of God’s attribute while claiming that he is unfathomable, unknowable, immutable and works in mysterious ways. ...

Re: Empathy

It's worth pointing out we've never had 'capitalism or 'socialism'.
The extent to which either might work is debatable, but lets not kid ourselves-capitalism has become a euphemism
for what is essentially state capitalism, that is the state intervening to prop up private business/industry.

Re: what's so great about human rights?

as a leftie, i'm sometimes surprised by the advocacy some of my fellow travellers have for the concept of rights. I agree with many things that people might want to enshrine in a constitution, or bill of rights ie the right to free speech (within boundaries), but wonder why they need to frame these...

Re: free will-how can it exist?

Thanks for the posts, I find the case against free will to be pretty convincing. Must admit i was already leaning towards that direction. But what are the implications of this, does this mean that i’m typing this post because of the Big Bang? Is everything i am and do somehow predictable (given som...

free will-how can it exist?

i've been trying to understand how you have get free will in a deterministic universe, there are compatibilist theories ie Dennett, but i simply don't get them. Seems to me unless you invoke some kind of ghost in the machine (and of course that's problematic to say the least) you're stuck with deter...

Re: Philosophy of Mind

From stuff i’ve read on the subject there certainly seems to be majority in favour of what Tallis sees as a reductive explanation of human consciousness, but i’ld be hard pressed to give stats showing a majority neuroscientists or philosophers in favour. I think what’s more important is to explore t...
