Re: The Success of the Establishment of the Church of Englan
From my quick scanning , it seems Paine was very anti-Christian and he was the first to call America against the King when Washington etc. were positioning themselves as against parliament but the idea of breaking from Britain seemed too radical. Paine died in poverty, he was given land by the US Co...

Re: The Success of the Establishment of the Church of Englan
Do we have any ideas why Paine was then left out of the main US narrative?
I am new to the forum but I haven't found Chaz's input to be uneducated. Any ideas and opinions should be explored, I don't see the forum as an area to abuse.
Regards, Gary

Re: The Success of the Establishment of the Church of Englan
I think the notion of moderation or established church is vital to any state that is being formed. My reading of the Federalists Paper needs brushing up but the US could have included a religion or like France tried to build a Mariane figure to deflect the lack of a state religion. The US does not h...

Re: The Success of the Establishment of the Church of Englan
"The greatest advantage of religion is to inspire wholly contrary instincts. There is no religion that does not place man's desires beyond and above earthly goods and that does not naturally raise his soul towards regions much superior to those of the senses. Nor is there any that does not impo...

Re: Hello from Ruskin graduate & OU student
Hello, yes the OU is brillant but it can be hard work. The best thing in Ruskin was all the views that were flying around, I haven't found that yet with any forums but feel it's because I haven't got use to them yet. I agree with Chaz about Metaphysics because once an argument gets into a belief sys...

Re: Against Stupidity
I am interested in why bureacrats are used as an example of the "stupidity of others". The example of stupidity was defined as "poor reasoning, entrenched mental habits and unexamined assumptions" but that describes the bulk of the working population. I have not in my working lif...

Re: Hello from Ruskin graduate & OU student
I like the way that Zizeck brings anything into philosophy because I was feeling like it was a closed shop of looking at each other written work. I wouldn't say I am up to speed with everything he says but then I do feel in philosophy somehow you are expected to accept whole packages as a complete d...

Re: Hello from Ruskin graduate & OU student
Hello, I have went through a short introduction on Zizeck, then "First as Tragedy then as Farce" and I am working through "Living in the End Times". I did some Aristole at college but we looked at Plato's Republic in detail.
Are you interested in Zizeck?

Hello from Ruskin graduate & OU student
Hello, I am interested in some parts of philosophy, some parts I feel are not for me (at this time). My background is politics at Ruskin College, Oxford which led to an interest in the Classics and their reception throught the years and now philosophy. Apart from my time at Ruskin I have always stud...
