Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

Well, you'll have to argue with Socrates about that: he clearly thought is was essential. But I think so, too. And I'll say why by pointing to the ways in which the supposition of a disjuncture between "the Good" and "God" is presupposed by your reframing of the dilemma, rather ...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

Do you want an answer? As a Theist, I can tell you what I think it is. The description of Euthyphro's Dilemma has a missing piece: and it's very key. Socrates thinks its so important that he makes darn sure he has it in place before he launches the dilemma. Because the truth is, absolutely everythi...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

Mine is that of Moral Objectivism and Moral Realism. There are nuances to it which you have missed. We need to consider, there is a need to consider, There are Two Senses of Reality https://forum.philosophynow.org/viewtopic.php?t=40265 1. Human-based Framework and System [FS] sense. 2. Philosophica...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

I don't think such a (false) dilemma is relevant here, theism and moral realism are just separate issues period. Most theists are moral realists, but people can also believe in a god that doesn't know objective morals, and people can be atheists while still believing in some universal moral feature...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

I believe you are viewing "morality & ethics" from a corrupted perspective which is not realistic. What is reality is all-there-is of which humans are intricately part and parcel of. Within the whole of reality and all human activities there are patterns which humans intuitively recog...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

I agree, it would probably end up as a can kicked down the road rather than a ball knocked out of the park. But it's fun for me to see how it develops. I think my ultimate take on this is that it works (it denies the objection made by the OP that theism is unrelated to moral realism at all), but th...

Wow, AC...you're such a refreshing voice of sanity...I'm quite gobsmacked, that somebody so far away from my own beliefs is as reasonable and careful as you are. Big respect. Respect returned from our previous conversations :) Well, there are coerced choices of two types, aren't there? There are th...

Re: They see gender pay gap as a problem but ...

A followup psychopathic answer. Look, anybody who grew up outside the West could give you in five minutes the correct theory on rape. Even anybody who grew up a century ago in the West, could also do that. You refuse to understand the truth, which is that you are a degenerate specimen living during...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

If what is good is actually good because God thinks it is good -- if God defines Goodness by His preferences -- then there is likewise no moral realism: there are no "moral truths," there are only preferences that God happens to have, and there is nothing about reality about why we ought ...

Re: Theism and Moral Realism are separate concepts

While I agree with all you wrote there, there is the logical possbility of breaking the dilemma via the concept of Morally Uncooperative Worlds . One version of that would be for instance to allow that Mackie is right to stress the oddness of moral properties that pertain to objects, subjects, situ...

Rape is not sustainable.
That is the psychopathic answer to that question
I noticed that. Yikes

Re: They see gender pay gap as a problem but ...

Have you not considered that someone's views might be reprehensible regardless of their ability to procure a mate? Biology does not care whatsoever about your ideology. Only results matter because the proof is always in the pudding. Furthermore, it is biology that decides what is sustainable and wh...

This is abject psychopathy IIRC I once invited you to view this (or any other philosophy forum) as a sort of daycare facility where a handful of roughly sane volunteers keep a number of quite incandescently insane loons busy for a while every now and then so that their long suffering families can g...
