Re: do people choose their religion?
1. There are no gods. (Atheism) 2. There are many gods. (Polytheism) 3. There is only one God. (Monotheism) One might not know which of these is true, perhaps. But one thing is for dead certain: at least two of the three are false, because the truthfulness of any one absolutely requires the falseho...

Re: do people choose their religion?
If we are, say, talking about Lacewing's ideas, then her age, height or weight don't matter that much. I.C. seems to be comparing me to a god (since that's what we were talking about)... which is not an unfit comparison to make. :D Even so, surely the context of an idea, and of why its seen as impo...

Re: do people choose their religion?
Of course, we could suppose NO ideas about God are correct, and everybody is wrong. That's logically possible. But what we can never suppose is that CONTRADICTORY statements about God are all true. The Law of Non-Contradiction eliminates that possibility. My understanding of the Law of Non-Contradi...

Re: Is marriage / relationships an oppressive gender role for men and women?
What would you replace marriage with ? Not have marriage vows valid until death because too many changes to a couple can happen over the course of their life time To me that is more of an ideal to aim for rather than a literal thing. I would not want to marry a guy who thinks marriage should come w...

Re: Is marriage / relationships an oppressive gender role for men and women?
I know these concepts/practices are evolving... along with our mindsets... it just doesn't seem fast enough sometimes. I am wary of old associations/patterns, even when we tell ourselves that we can be above it. It seems to take major shifts for most people to evolve clearly into new territory. As ...

Re: do people choose their religion?
WHICH theist exposure is correct? Well, think about it this way: if some people say "Lacewing" is a 120 lb. 40 year old woman, and some say "Lacewing" is a 75 year old, 350 lb. man, we've got irreconcilable "exposures" to the idea of Lacewing. And the only one that's g...

Re: Hello everyone
Congratulations, Stacie, on graduating in the middle of a global pandemic!! :D Seems like a whole new world is unfolding. May your path into it and through it be bright and fun! Thanks. Its my first pandemic. I have been getting into arguments with some family members about how practical studying p...

Re: State Education Law Suit
Good point, FiH! Even if the parent is only worried about "what will the neighbors think", the stage is set for conflict within the family. If the child is a teen, well, the parent may just have to let the teen stay home from church. Maybe an "enlightened" parent will at least a...

Re: Is marriage / relationships an oppressive gender role for men and women?
Domestic partnership? I think it should have access to the same benefits that married partnerships do. Then it just becomes marriage by another name. Not sure what changes? Marriage works for some people -- but it shouldn't be required by society. In most places marriage in not mandatory. At the mi...

What would you replace marriage with?
There are plenty of people who decide that marriage is told hat, and just live together - being in effect a married couple but lacking certain legal protections. Why not just get married?

Bonkers?? Note this supposed fact; Like I said, bonkers. Unless you are a Calvinist or an Islamic fundamentalist. In which case it is still bonkers, but it will not seem bonkers. The Catholic view - is that God will not punish anyone for things that are beyond their control. At least, that is what ...

Re: Why is nazism popular today?
"Survival of the fittest" is not a moral principle. One could thus practice a code of "kill the weak" and be very well evolutionarily adapted. This year I had a science teacher go on a major rant about how "survival of the fittest" is not what people think it is. It is...

Re: do people choose their religion?
If most humans live and die with the religion that they are born with from their family or society that they didn't choose, how come God rewards/punishes us for something that we didn't even choose? You can extend the argument further and say that since the circumstances that we come to in the worl...

I know people who fancy themselves hacktivists.
They are a total waste of space - and their technical know-how does not seem to go beyond using TOR to anonymously send insults to "TERFS", "fascists", etc.
