Re: Atheism on Trial
Are you trying to claim " a child's laughter" is a unifying principle of the universe? Does it have meaning? If yes, then it does not stand apart from any unifying principle worth considering. You don't appear to comprehend that a unifying principle and the things a unifying principle is ...

Re: Atheism on Trial
A "principle" cannot be seen or measured by definition . Wow. You know, to say something that clueless if I hadn't yet provided an example of unifying principles would be one thing... but to say it after already having had it pointed out to you that *the laws of physics* are a unifying pr...

Re: Atheism on Trial
I laid out one SPECIFIC unifying principle of the universe. If you are talking about a DIFFERENT one then say so instead of constantly hiding behind vaqueness so you don't have to defend your position. A "principle" cannot be seen or measured by definition . Wow. You know, to say somethin...

Re: Atheism on Trial
I have no idea what you mean by "unifying principle". Then what the bloody hell are you doing in a philosophy forum? You belong outside, playing in your sandbox of ideas to your heart' content. Meaning, that"unifying principle" can refer to a WIDE VARIETY OF THINGS. I laid out o...

Re: Atheism on Trial
Yes, amazing how if you're making assertions people expect you to actually present your arguments along with them. It's not amazing at all. Afre all, it's a lot easier than pondering things for yourself. Which is why you appear to require everyone except you to do so? Reasoning be damned????? Yes. ...

Re: Atheism on Trial
It is not surprising that an atheist would demand things to be spelled out for them in order for it to be simply accepted or rejected. Yes, amazing how if you're making assertions people expect you to actually present your arguments along with them. In this trial, the atheist's position has been pr...

Re: Atheism on Trial
Philosophy is at the interface between inside and outside and between the universal and particulars. It is not a contest between thesis and antithesis, between winning and losing ideas, but rather a dialectic between ideas for the advancement of understanding. That a 'philosopher' would boast about...

Re: Atheism on Trial
I had to look to find these but only discovered something regarding abstractions. It is you above here who stated you had questions. What particularly are you questioning yourself regarding atheism? Your issue is probably that... 1. The inglorious One's "observations" are not observations...

Re: Atheism on Trial
I gave a list of five observations without drawing drawing any conclusion myself (though I did also quote Francis Bacon). The list was not seriously challenged by atheists, but led to red herrings, non-sequitur analogies, straw man arguments, question-begging and misrepresentation of what was said....

Re: Atheism on Trial
Still with the red herring, eh? Can you answer the question or at least challenge the observations? Would you care to explain how addressing what those Catholics you brought up *actually believe* instead of what a few of them *pretend to believe* is a "Red Herring? And I assume you're talking ...

Re: Atheism on Trial
I think Catholics who say that God does not exist as such would disagree. It is not at all uncommon to hear some theists say, "God does not exist, but is existence itself." Yeah, I know a few people who love to make that argument. Then you ask them how "Being Itself" procreated ...

Re: Atheism on Trial
Apparently you're having difficulty with the difference between the illustration of a concept and constructing a strawman. Who is talking about dimension shifting gnomes? Me. I am talking about them. Because I am using them as a random example of an extraordinary claim of the existence of some enti...

Re: Atheism on Trial
It is contingent on theism to support it's claim, it is NOT contingent on atheists to disprove the claim to justify not blindly accepting it. Inglorious is not the sharpest chisel in the rack, gcomeau, and the notion of ANALOGY appears to be beyond his comprehension. However analogy is a useful too...

Re: Atheism on Trial
Would you care to address my illustration of the difference between making a negating claim and simply not being convinced by the original claim and how this relates to the burden of proof? Or were you going to limit your responses to general vague statements implying irrationality on my part witho...

Re: Atheism on Trial
Atheism is not the negation of theism. It is the lack of acceptance of the claims made by theism. It is the state of *not being convinced* by theism's argument that there exists a supreme being. This reminds me of "the Claw" correcting Maxwell Smart in pronouncing his name: "No...
